Default $8.99 for a head of cauliflower

I chipped my car out of the ice this morning to make a grocery run. Out of eggs! Oh no!

However, the sticker shock came in the produce section, where an ordinary head of cauliflower was priced at $8.99! I'm still getting over paying $5/head at Thanksgiving. Everybody HAD TO HAVE mashed fauxtatoes, and how could I refuse a request like that?

I'm pretty well spoiled by the privilege of buying all kinds of fresh veggies at all times of the year. But reality sets in when weather patterns go nuts.

So I bought a cabbage, and will do something delicious with it.

Yes, up here in Ontario Canada, the price of imported vegetables skyrocketed in the last week or so. $8.97 for cauli, $4.97 for a bundle of broccoli .. $2.97 for a small head of romaine. These were the prices at my local "No Frills" discount grocery .. can't imagine the price at "upscale" shops . And it's not even the dead of winter yet!!

Be aware that the frozen versions of favourites like broccoli and cauli will sell out quickly, so if you've got the freezer space .. consider stocking up now before they're gone until next year's growing season is underway

Caulifower is special situatiuon this month due to the cold weather, but also some blame being laid on LC and Paleo types...like you Noticed even in Sweden:

http://www.dietdoctor.com/theres-a-...rices-skyrocket

I laid in some frozen cauliflower bags before the holidays (Walmart Great Value brand) and haven't noticed if their supply/price has also been affected since then.
I find frozen is fine for mashed fauxtatoes, other recipes you may see the taste difference.

*Looks up the zero-carb thread*

That's crazy. You could buy premium steak cheaper than cauliflower.

I paid something ridiculous for celery a few weeks ago; before the Xmas rush. $2.97 from No Frills. I don't even want to look at fresh veggies prices now. I'm glad I have quite a bit of canned, frozen, and enough onions/carrots/celery to get me by for a few weeks worth of soup and stew, now that winter finally arrived in Ontario.

Frozen veggies. Hmmm. Didn't think of that. I will now!

Yup---and berries are pricey now as well.

My supermarket ran out of cauliflower recently and I got panicky!

My local food Lion has frozen cauliflower florets for $1.29 per lbs. Except if you want to eat it raw it is a good substitute for fresh right now.

That's a great tip, Janet

I also find that frozen cauli works well for cauli-rice .. *BUT* .. you have to chop it up while still frozen. Either pulse quickly on-off a few times in a food processor .. or grate by hand with a box-grater (my preferred method). Thawed cauli won't grate very well because it's too soft .. and in a food processor it just turns into a watery mush

.

Holy Hannah, I thought you guys were kidding about the price of cauliflower... I'll have to check it out when I go grocery shopping tomorrow or Wednesday!

Wow! Glad I live on the west coast. I just bought a head of cauliflower today - organic! - at 1.59/lb. Maybe I should run out and buy a few more.

It is probably related to transportation costs to truck it up north since most of the growing goes on in Cali, Texas and Florida.
When the weather gets more harsh, the prices go up because the prices are normal here, about $2.50
They also always charge more during Christmas..supply and demand.

I ran into the same thing, only the cauliflower heads were about a third of the size! Cauliflower is a staple in my home and I panicked. Decided to stop at a much smaller grocery store and apparently they were behind on the price increase because they had huge cauliflower for great price so I walked out with 6 of them grinning ear to ear at my steal. Felt like I hit the jackpot! Avacados were same issue so I grabbed a bunch of those too. I couldn't even find frozen cauliflower at the big box store either. Sometimes these little mom n pop grocery stores really have the best produce and prices.

The DietDoctor commented on the cauli shortage in his blog feed today. He's blaming all those Paleo people for driving up demand!
