Default Halloween Planning

Ha! I'm early I know, but I'm usually late.

Every year I intend to get some little hand-out toys for kids that come to my door, in order to avoid the temptation of candy. Also because I don't think consuming several pounds of sugar is good for kids. So, I started looking at little toys on Amazon but didn't see anything all that promising.

Does anyone have any suggestions for little inexpensive toys that one can hand out?

Usually I just pretend I'm not home, but perhaps if I hand out toys I can set a precedent for that others might heed.

I don't want to spend more than $10-15 on toys and they should last a few years in case there are left-over toys for the next year(s).

Good for you for thinking of this so early!!

Oriental Trading (online wesbite- look for a free shipping coupon code) sells lots of little doodads that kids love. If you have a Dollar Tree near you, they sell packages of party favors with six little toys in it. They also sell Tattoos, which are another favorite with kids.

Around Halloween, at CVS and Target, I've also seen bags of tiny containers of play d'oh. I've actually been impressed by the number of non-candy options, such as Halloween pencils, stores are providing at Halloween!

Wonderful! Thanks for the suggestions. Now... I hope I act on them before the holiday arrives.

Good for you for thinking of this.

For the last two years I lived in a neighborhood that was almost entirely students, so we never got trick-or-treaters, but now I'm in a neighborhood with more families so it might happen this year.
Personally, I'll probably just go out that night so that I'm not tempted by a bowl of candy, and don't feel guilty about handing out sugar bombs to kids.

I appreciate you trying to set a good example, though.

I like the sugar free gum idea. The sad fact is (and I've seen/heard this from kids walking away from a house after getting their treat), if you hand out anything other than candy, it's likely to end up pitched on your lawn or someone else's because they only want the sugar.

We haven't passed out anything on Halloween for probably 20 years, ever since I taught school. I decided I wasn't going to be one of those people sugaring up the kids and then sicking them on the poor teachers the next day.

I just learned about an online store called minimus that carries travel-sized versions of everything. They have a toy section:

Don't forget snack size bags of peanuts, almonds, slim jims, etc. I've even purchased bags of potato chips, --- I know, I know
