Default Who treats your PCOS?

I would be interested to hear how many of you are treated by an endocrinologist, internist or other type specialist for your PCOS - I have probably have had it for 40 years but was just recently told that I probably have it - hirsuitism, irregular periods, skin tags, alopecia - the only thing I did not have was infertility. I have been told that you can have PCOS and still get pregnant.

I am presently with an Internal Med physician but thought we the PCOS I might need to see and endocrinologist. I am also a Type II diabetic - probably been insulin resistant all that time too.

Just needed to see if it worth changing docs.

An endochrinologist is the one who should help you with he metabolic syndrome. Stick to Atkins or bernstein and monitor yr blood sugar often and reduce dosage as you get over insuline resistence. I invite you to the Diabetes section where many people have more opinions on this.

Actually, no one dx it until i went to a dermatologist for laser therapy.
I've never had fertility issues, so no one said anything. I've been told my androgen levels were high, but no treatment.

GREAT news though. I now have 'normal' hormone levels. No more skin tags, no more extra hair sprouting (the old stuff is being lasered away). The more weight you lose, the fewer symptoms you will have.

it's amazing.

I saw both an endocrinologist and a reproductive endocrinologist.

I think if you search for the website for the American Clinical Endocrinology (maybe -ist) Society, they have a physician locater by specialty...so if you see PCOS listed that's at least a good sign they know what it is!

I take something called Estrosense. It took 2 months and all my PCOS symptoms were gone.

I tried to stay away from the Dr because their solution was to use estrogen therapy in the form of birth control - which exasperates the problem in the long run - regardless of being overweight or not. You do not need to be overweight to have PCOS.

It is linked with having insulin resistance - because of being in an estrogen dominant environment (your body).

The great thing about losing weight though, is that it reduces the amount of estrogen in your body (because fat is loaded with estrogen), the down part is, your liver filters all this estrogen and if it doesn't get cleaned out from time to time, can get plugged up with estrogen and since the liver also metabolizes the thyroid hormone, if its plugged up it can't, so the thyroid slows down function because the liver sends out "word" that it needs to slow down or it will quit functioning. So the thyroid slows down.. and mimics symptoms of different thyroid issues, like hash's etc.

Hope that helps some.

Lisa

what's the deal with estrosense? i googled it but only found sites selling the product. no reviews or info beyond that. does it help with acne or hair loss?

i thought the problem with PCOS was testosterone, not estrogen. weird.

so... did it help you with the cosmetic aspects of PCOS (if you had any)? i just searched on soulcysters dot net for people's accounts of using it, but any references on there were by women trying it for PMS and menstrual problems...

Acne is a symptom of estrogen dominance. So clear up one problem, it helps to alleviate or clear the other problem.

Lisa

I've never suffered with true acne issues. I used to have issues with painful acne type lumps on my cheekbones mainly - sometimes chin and around the nose.

I was initially diagnosed/preliminarily treated by a Women's Health Specialist (Physicians Asst) who was also my PCP - I see a Dermatologist now who has been a HUGE amount of help for me.

I have no desires to conceive and cant even attempt because to attempt to carry would literally kill me (more problems heightened by PCOS) - Im content with the one child I have.

The Dermatologist I have has actually done alot of correspondence/research projects on his female patients afflicted with PCOS and a number of common ailments associated with it - one of which I learned that I developed a high sensitivity/allergy to Dairy thanks to being off of it in a trial period.
