Default Oatmeal on Atkins..

I am trying to figure out if I can eat McCaNN's Irish Oatmeal (Steel Cut)...

I am looking on adding a different source of fibre while on Atkins.

When I try to go through the Nutritional Facts, I can see no way of eating the Oatmeal, the carb count is too high.

Am I reading it wrong, because a lot of people on this board refer to eating Oatmeal.

The breakdown is as follows:

Total Calories 150
Calories From Fat 20

Total Fat 2 g 3%
Saturated Fat 0 g 0%
Polyunsaturated Fat 1 g
Monounsaturated Fat 1 g

Cholesterol 0 mg 0%
Sodium 0 mg 0%

Total Carbohydrates 26 g 9%
Dietary Fiber 4 g 15%
Soluble Fiber 2 g
Insoluble Fiber 2 g
Sugars 0 g

Protein 4 g

(reference for this info located here:
http://www.netrition.com/mccanns_oats_page.html)

So if I read this correctly (under Atkins) 26g - 4g (fibre) = 22g.

I dont see any way of allocating 22g to breakfast...

Am I doing something wrong?

Hi Callahan,

You do see a lot of people referring to oatmeal here. It all depends on what stage of Atkins you're on whether you can have oatmeal or not. Oatmeal is not allowed on induction, but in later stages of Atkins you might be able to add it in. Also a lot of people on other low or modified carb plans can use the oatmeal - some might only take a 1/2 serving of it depending on the carb allowance they are aiming for. On some of the plans the carbs are counted a different way on SPII for example you do not count the carbs in green veggies - only the carbs in starchy veggies, fruits, dairy and things like oatmeal or grains.

So if you were on a plan that aimed for 60 carbs a day you could quite easily allow 20 for oatmeal at breakfast. Hope that clears it up a bit for you.

Koko gave you some great advice and explanations. I eat steel cut oats for breakfast 90% of the time, but I'm in OWL and can eat about 20-60 carbs a day. Have you tried ground flax seed cereals? They don't have nearly as many carbs as oats do, it's quite tasty and has a good amount of fiber. You can make your own (do a recipe search) or you can buy it, I found a delicious peach one, I think it was called Aunt Paula's...

Hi Callahan. If found this low carb oatmeal recipe at expertfoods.com; if you don't have thicken thin you may use xanthan gum. Good Luck.

Recipe By : Barbara Pollack
Serving Size: 1 Preparation Time :02

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
-------- ------------ --------------------------------
1 tablespoons ThickenThin not/Cereal thickener~Buy Now (15ml)
1 tablespoons rolled oats, preferably quick oats
1/2 cup warm water
maple flavoring or cinnamon or molasses - to taste

Whisk together the dry ingredients.

Spray or grease sides of bowl and add a half cup (120ml) warm water.

Stir or whisk dry ingredients into water. Microwave one minute.

Whisk to break up lumps. Microwave 30-60 seconds more. Stir in enough of the flavoring of your choice to darken it to oatmeal color.

Serve with salt, sweetener, butter and/or cream to taste.

Nutrition per serving (calculated by Mastercook without the flavorings): 45 calories; 0.3g fat (0.1 sat); 4.9g carb (of which 1.8g is fiber); 4.9g protein.

Im doing OWL - 30 carbs or less usually but I have had plain oatmeal on several occasions with no problems. Granted, it does add carbs but if you watch your carb consumption for the rest of the day and your CCL is 30 or above, you can eat a serving every so often.

Be careful with using quick cooking oats as they're highly processed (a lot like minute rice). While you may be able to work in the carb count for quick oats, the glycemic index is very high. If you're going to have oatmeal, the less processed the better so old fashioned or steel cut would probably be best.
Another option would be to look for something at your local health food store called Keto Oatmeal. It has 12 grams total with 9 grams of fiber for an ECC of 3; a lot more doable for someone just leaving induction.

The carb count for your oatmeal is for a very large serving size - most boxes I have seen here give a serving size as 1/3rd cup (dry) and a carb count of 17 and 3 fibre.

I have oatmeal for breakfast about 4 times a week. I eat 35-50 carbs a day though. I use 1/4 of cup oats (about 10 net carbs), 2 tablespoons of wheat bran (2 net carbs, and 6 carbs fibre!) and 1 cup of water - boil, add cream and sweetner and eat.

Yep I love my oatmeal too, I eat it 4-5 times aweek

I don't buy any mixes, I make my own.

Appx:

1/4 Old fashion oats, 2-3 tbsp of wheat germ, 1/4 cup of ground flax meal, water to cover well.

Microwave on Power 6 for 2 mins, stir, then one more min.

Add any of the following:

Nuts
cream cheese
N/S jam
N/S sryup
for fruit, Blueberries, raspberries, or 1/3 of a banana
Bit of cream if needed.

I'm on Maintenance, but started this about 2/3 's the way through OWL.

It's very filling and fast

cheers Kathy

I'd like to start eating oatmeal again too, especially as winter approaches...

Is the Keto oatmeal any good?

I hated keto oatmeal. Too sweet and chemical-like aftertaste. I'm sure there are good reviews on it though, try a search.

Another yucko to the Keto oatmeal here... I am a huge fan of the hot Flax o Meal cereals though. Like Lisa said, tastes are all different. The only way one will know what they personally like, is to try a variety of things.

I tried the KETO oatmeal. It was watery, small portion and dull.

I also have the MiniCarb milk chocolate hot cereal. It was nasty until I added sweetner, then it was really good. Until about 30 mins later when I was headed to class and I got the worst aftertaste in my mouth, blah.

I eat the steel cut oatmeal several times a week, with some protein powder and a little butter. I find that with the way I excercise, I can eat upwards of around 100 - 120 carbs a day. I actually felt better with the addition of carbs, I think it's the weight lifting. Oatmeal is the only grain type thing that I eat, though, and I will alternate oatmeal w/ flax cereal. I like the hot cereal in the winter (even though here in California it's not exactly a 'real' winter!)
