I completed the 24 hour food recall tonight. It was very poorly designed, in my opinion. The food database in MY PLAN does a much better job in tracking my meals than I could accomplish in that survey. Regular single item foods were not much of a problem. The choices to pick how much I ate is imprecise. I weigh my food. My big problem was that I had two home-made recipe items on the day in question. I had Faux potato salad (sub cauliflower for potatoes) and a chocolate flax mug muffin. I did OK picking out the ingredients of the faux potato salad, but most of the ingredients of my flax muffin were not on the list of food options. Even cocoa was later interpreted as hot chocolate and not cocoa powder. In the end they roped me into associating the flax muffin with a grain muffin and I had no opportunity to change it. It took me over an hour to plug in my 2 meal day and it ended up not representing the truth about how I ate. I was quite disappointed.

I have only the "Wrap Up" questionnaire to do. All in all it was an OK survey/study I guess. It wasn't too tough to do, but I'm not sure what value they will get from all this information. I'm glad that I did it. But in the end I think it was more a waste of time. I did my best to represent our WOE.

Me too. I almost put down the chocolate, until I realized they likely meant with sugar. Fortunately, I had eaten pretty plain food so it almost reflected what I ate - but not perfectly. Since there was no way to enter sugar-free cocoa, I didn't mention it at all. Some of the others were iffy - by fried did they mean battered & deep-fried? Or sautéed?

I don't remember all the choices, but I thought some of the lists were a bit odd.

I finished up the survey today. I think that the most interesting element of this exercise was what was missing from this series of "diet" surveys... there were no questions about weight or weight loss. It was all about what you eat and how healthy you are (or are not) in body and in mind. I just wish I could have represented how I eat a little better. I also wish that LCHF was a selectable option on the diet plan list. I fear that by selecting "Other" and writing in my diet plan my results will be overlooked. Oh well. It is what it is. I look forward to seeing what conclusions they draw from this.

As mentioned earlier there was a limited sized block for adding a feedback comment on this final survey. This is what I managed to squeeze in...

I lost 250 lbs from 2/2014 - 8/2016 by changing how I eat to Low Carb High Fat. I'm no longer obese. I still eat LCHF. Macros:15%C/25%P/60%F BTW 24 hr recall didn't include food that I eat. I don't eat grain. There was no way to put in my flax muffin.

I indicated that I would be willing to be contacted for a followup survey. This wasn't too much work. I was happy to do it.

Because I eat almost entirely single ingredient foods I didn't have much problem with the food survey. One thing was very telling however. In the list of oils and fats you might eat they left out coconut oil. I use only coconut oil or olive oil. It shows where their heads are at or at least where they are not at. I don't expect much from this study. It just felt too all over the place and how reliable and valid is the data they are collecting this way? For example, they ask for amount estimates of food in cups while I use ounces for everything. Maybe they'll generate a hypothesis or two that might be worth looking into but I'm skeptical of the whole endeavor.
