Acutally, Protein Power, the Eades' first book, is referred to as PP here. PPLP is their second book, Protein Power for Life Plan, and it is somewhat different from PP. They have refined it, and Dr. Eades made the comment that it is the book they intended to write the first time around.

PP focuses on weight loss, while PPLP includes weight loss but also talks about overall health.

One of the main "practical" differences is that in PP they give you a complicated formula for calculating your daily protein needs, while in the 2nd book they just give you a chart based on height, weight, and gender. The chart rounds everything up- which means that if you follow the chart your'e definitely getting at least the amount you would have calculated.

However, I had a hard time getting in enough protein based on the chart, and I was getting seriously sick of PP and ready to give up on it altogether, when I realized I was easily (by following my own hunger cues) getting enough protein based on the calculations. So I reset my Fitday protein minimum to reflect the calculated protein needs- some days I eat just enough, some days I'm way over, but the pressure is off.

I wish they'd included the calculation formulas AND the charts in PPLP, to give people the choice of which method to choose.

PPLP has a minimum protein requirement, per Ruth's post, that you eat every day. Beyond that, you can eat up to 40g carbs per day of your choice, that are eaten in 7 - 10g quantities at 3 meals and snacks. Those are net carbs: you subtract out fiber (and sugar alcohols if you consume them). This is the weight loss phase. You then add carbs gradually in pre-maintenance and maintenance.

There is no carb ladder. You may not find yourself in ketosis -- it isn't necessary for either appetite control or weight loss.

The basic idea behind Atkins is carb restriction both in terms of number of carbs and where they come from. The basic idea behind PPLP is sufficient protein and carb restriction but you choose where your carbs come from.
