Default Vinegar

Newbie here ~ question:

I seldom find vinegar listed within low carb food lists.

Are there problems with "red wine vinegar"
and/or Braggs Organic Apple Cider Vinegar?

PLMK. Thank you.

Most vinegars are low carb.
However Dr Atkins said to avoid Balsamic Vinegar.

That's because balsamic vinegar contains about 15g of sugars (50% glucose & 50% fructose) per 100g.
However, I don't accept that everyone has to avoid it completely. It's just a matter of using a modest amount and including the carbs it contains in your daily carb allocation. A typical single serving for me is less than 5g (about 1 tsp), which is enough to add palatability to a salad but adds less than 1g of carbs.

Apple cider vinegar is amazing!! I wish I could say I take it every day but usually only a couple tablespoons a couple times a month. That stuff is miraculous!! Roto-rooter for tummies.
Agree with Bintang about using balsamic vinegar sparingly as total daily carb allocation.

I make vinaigrette from 3/4 cup olive oil, 1/4 cup lemon juice (half a lemon) and 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar plus seasonings. I use it every day. I never use balsamic vinegar. Dr Richard Bernstein (The Diabetes Solution) said to avoid it so I do.

Dr. Fung, as many previous doctors, Atkins, Bernstein, etc, recommend vinegar for blood glucose control. Up to 2 T before each meal, or just before dinner or bedtime.

Braggs ACV is something (1-2 tbsp.) I take with water 1-2 times a day before my evening meal and sometimes before bedtime. It's a great product which balances the digestive function and lowers blood glucose. For general health including insulin management, it's a sound product to add to your eating approach.

Just a typo, but in case anyone is looking for the product, it's Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar.
I need to get back into the habit like you!

The biggest problem with balsamic vinegar (particularly in the U.S.) is that it's often loaded with added sugar and flavorings. There are some decent ones out there, but they are generally pretty pricey and not easy to find.

Red wine vinegar, apple cider vinegar, and plain white vinegar are all good choices. Be careful with any flavored vinegars.

Yes. I know about balsamic vinegar and it's sugar ingredients.

I wanted to know about "red wine vinegar" as I've been using
it lately without oil in salads. It is very satisfying and,
I add tons of great spices with no oil. Apparently,
now I can add Atkins' approved oil to the salad
So, guessing red wine vinegar is good to go

I have been using Bragg's Organic Apple Cider Vinegar with Mother
for three weeks. Have used it to suppress hunger and
any other "wild tonic snake oil" claims - lol.
So, BOACVwM is happening and "approved"

. . . . . don't you just love these little jump icons?

Yes, approved and encouraged for a diabetic. Also suggested are unprocessed oils for your salad. Coming from WFPB, you may have a supply of canola or other processed seed oils. This suggestion is not critical, but favor a good virgin olive oil or avocado oil, plus natural fats for foods such as butter and cocnut oil.

Sugar makes you hungry, carbohydrate makes you fat, and polyunsaturated oils make you inflamed and sick...Gary Fettke

Hi RhythmBeat -

I'm diabetic, too. I eat to my meter because what works for one person - or even many - may not work for me. When you try a new food, test & see if it works for you.

i love ACV, too- sometimes i use balsamic. I also love some fancy ones like champagne, but i always read the labels before picking one. They vary from 1g carb per tbsp to 10 or more!

For an asian twist, UNSWEETENED seasoned rice vinegar with toasted sesame oil, a little splenda and crushed red pepper is a favorite. the vinegar is carb free.

I second the suggestion to pick high quality fats for your salads, as well. in addition to olive oil, avocado oil, walnut oil, etc...bacon fat makes a great "dressing" over a wilted spinach salad. i especially like this as an entree with a poached egg and goat cheese.

and ha! yes i love the emoticons on this site.
