Default Kaypeeoh - Treadmill calories

Kaypeeoh:

I was wondering if you would look at these treadmill numbers. I've always disregarded the treadmill numbers, except for distance, incline, and pace.

Do these sound accurate? They can't be.

3.03 miles, 24:17 minutes, 485 calories, 2.5% incline, 7.5 mph

I thought it was only 100 calories per mile outside, then about .5 or 1.0 % incline to mimic outside. How did this calculate 485 calories, even with the 2.5% incline?

Thanks.

It's roughly 100 calories per mile on level ground. I didn't think speed is much of a factor although your 8:00 pace is decent. A good treadmill increases the calorie count with incline. I don't know what the calorie use would be for 2.5% incline but 161 calories per mile does seem high. I get 200 calories per mile at 10% grade. My treadmill shows calories and fat calories. I used to add the numbers til I realized the first number is total calories and the second is the percentage of calories burned from fat. But I'm recalling that only added up to around 140 calories per mile. I imagine some treadmills can factor in the speed you're running at. You might not burn a lot more calories at an 8:00 pace but you've revved up your metabolism more than a 12:00 pace would cause so you continue to burn fat for a period after you've finished the workout. Perhaps the mill is estimating that. Just a guess.

If you use a gym I'd suggest trying other treadmills to see how they compare. Unless they're calibrated accurately, you can't believe what they tell you.

I mentioned on another site, a friend who tested his treadmill while wearing a heart rate monitor. At zero incline, the heart rate monitor showed no increase over a similar pace on the track. At 1%, the heart rate was essentially unchanged.

Default Thanks

It would be interesting to see how it compares to a couple at a gym. JUst curious. I always thought the numbers seemed odd.

Thanks.
