Hi brnagain,
Welcome to the forum! I never heard of it until I read your post and looked at Dr Thompson's website. How's it working for you?
The website didn't give much in the way of exact data. Why don't you start a MY PLAN to let us see what you're eating.

My FBG was 95 this morning. The first time since I've been diagnosed with prediabetes! I'm doing Atkins and enjoying all the delish foods, too. LC is so healthy!

Hi Bornagain!
I'm doing SB, but with one eye on GI and GL. I have a couple of GL books and I'm really into it.
Only problem is a suggested meal size of what fits in your cupped hands.
Fat chance!
Other than that, I do follow the principles!

Thanks for your responses!

If I had to describe the plan I would say it is similar to South Beach, but there are no phases, fruit is allowed and encouraged from day 1, and there are no restrictions on saturated fats. I am really enjoying it, particularly because counting carb grams just drove me crazy.

I just focus on foods with a low glycemic load, avoiding most starches and sugars. All the good low carb foods I always enjoyed fit into this category.

I really enjoy this plan. I started at 210 and am now 192. I lose VERY slowly, but would like to get down to 140 (a size 12 again!).

I don't have Thompson, but the books I have, do say to keep your saturated fats low.
They don't have carbs, and so they have no GI/GL reading, but that is only part of the story.

Whatever you are doing, it seems to suit you anyway!

med, your stats are AWESOME!!

Are you finding it hard to find low fat dairy products over there? I know SB only allows lowfat dairy. I heard there are no fat free and few low fat dairy foods in England, but don't know how accurate that is.

My mother in law was born in England and remained a loyal Brit until the day she passed away, always belonging to British clubs here in the States. Someday, my husband and I will visit; it is a dream of ours!

No, UK has been really into low fat foods for a couple of generations now.
I eat 0% greek yogurt, and the LF fruit yogs i buy are only 80KC, the 'Semi skimmed' milk I use is 1.7% fat, but you can get (tasteless) 0%. LF Hummus is less than 10% fat, etc, etc.
I think we do OK.
Low fat cheeses tend to be a bit tasteless, but I usually just eat less of real cheese instead!
Plenty low fat meats, and trimmed meats.
and lots of low fat processed foods too, but of course we don't buy those! LOL!

Tonya, I follow the principles in Rob Thompson's books.

He has two books out. The first was written in 2004, The New Low Carb Way of Life, and the second is his newest, The Glycemic Load Diet. The second book is really just a condensed version of his first, and much easier to understand, so I recommend the second book.

It's similar to South Beach in that there's no counting and you focus on low glycemic foods, but the similarity really ends there. You don't have to eat low saturated fat foods (like Atkins), and low glycemic fruit is allowed from day one.

It's really simple and like SB, a way of eating, not a diet.

I used to count carbs until it drove me crazy, and I knew I couldn't live that way anymore. I really admire folks who don't mind the counting, but I couldn't make it work for me.

med, good to know the UK has such a great assortment of lower fat foods! I had no idea South Beach was so popular over there!
