Default Do you tell someone their blood sugar reading?

In my medical class several people gave blood, the blood was spun down and the serum divided up randomly to practice blood sugar testing. I happened to get my friends serum. I tested 10 times with the average 148. Should I tell her she could be diabetic?

I'm not that clear about the HIIPA laws, if its ethical to even discuss it.

If in the class, the identity of whose serum you had was not kept a secret, then there wouldn't be a HIPAA violation to tell your friend what the BG reading was. The way the class is structured is more where the violation (if any occurred).

That said, a high reading may not mean anything. Depends on when she ate and what she ate. You could just tell the her what the reading was without any comment on it's meaning.

So treat it like a 'real' medical situation. Peoples names are written on the tubes. We wrote the data on the board without names so everyone can practice statistics.

BG is a routine test so she could already know.
