I wish her cold would go away, it's hard to do an experiment like this while sick, it can confuse the results.

Default Metabolic cancer research project

Dr. Thomas Seyfried's project to investigate using a ketogenic diet to treat cancer.

Exciting! http://www.singlecausesinglecure.or...store-protocol/

I'll be donating to this one.

Interesting article about ketosis diet and cancer:

Default Fight Cancer with a Ketogenic Diet, new book based on work of Dr. Seyfried

The Fight Cancer with a Ketogenic Diet eBook explains how, why and provides the evidence shown in scientific studies. This essential, well referenced eBook offers 80 pages of detail on how to implement a restricted ketogenic diet to destroy cancer cells. It provides information on:

-why a low carb, ketogenic diet works to kill cancer cells, and how to do the diet and~monitor your progress
-what blood glucose and ketone levels have to be reached to destroy cancer
-the details on what to eat and how much to eat
-why certain foods must be restricted
-why calorie restriction is important
-whether alcohol is allowed
-the debate on acidity vs alkalinity and much more.

The eBook includes all the specifics on how to correctly use the diet to put metabolic pressure on cancer cells to slow and stop cancer growth, and hopefully prevent recurrence. Ten percent of the profits from the eBook will go to support the ketogenic research of Dr. Seyfried and his team at Boston College, and Dr. Dominic D'Agostino's work on ketone esters at the University of South Florida.

More about the book: http://www.ketogenic-diet-resource.com/cancer-diet.html

This book was written by Ellen Davis, author of the http://www.ketogenic-diet-resource.com and http://www.healthy-eating-politics.com websites. I have admired these websites for being so clearly written and organized, and can see from the “Quick Peek” that this book too will provide clear explanations and practical tips to implement the diet. The author also emphasizes in the ebook ways of adjusting the diet according to what works for the individual.

I won't buy it, but I'm happy there's a practical book out there to treat cancer with low-carb. This should be relevant: http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?t=447278

Nancy,
This is fascinating..how did you find out about this foundation? I'll be happy to support it and spread the word. I was going to write to various oncologists/cancer suppport groups about the book...now will include info on both. Thanks,

Thanks..I found it. Soon as I catch up with one social media, everyone has moved on to another new one
This website is new, and they don't have their 501c yet, but looking forward to good things if this article is an indication. http://www.singlecausesinglecure.or...eory-of-cancer/

Default Cancer Cells Are Sugar Addicts

In the new issue of Well Being Journal Magazine for September/October 2013, one of the main articles is entitled "Cancer Cells Are Sugar Addicts: Using a Ketogenic Diet to Treat Cancer." There isn't an online copy available yet since the issue is just starting to hit the shelves, but here are a few quotes from the article:

Quote:
...cancer cells are unable to utilize ketones when glucose is low. Cancer cells have damaged mitochondria, and they lack metabolic flexibility. Since they can't use ketones, cancer cells must have glucose to stay alive and grow.

In other words, most cancer cells are vulnerable to any metabolic change that denies them blood sugar or a source of sugar for fuel.

Quote:
Thomas Seyfried's [Ph.D.] team has shown in several studies that calorie restriction in conjunction with a restricted ketogenic diet improves cancer outcomes because the diet can reduce tumor blood vessel growth, promote cancer cell suicide factors (apoptosis), destabilize the tumor DNA, reduce tumor size, reduce cancer-growth-stimulating IGF-1 hormone, and reduce inflammation.

The article mentions that specifically cancers that are prone to being seen on a FDG-PET scan are the ones that will be treated most effectively by a ketogenic diet since these are the cancers that have a special affinity for glucose (the testing process with an FDG scan involves a metabolically neutral glucose analog that has a radioactive isotope attached, which makes it unuseable, but shows up on the scan but the cancer cells gather the analog since it contains glucose to attempt to use as fuel).

I've been reading quite a few keto/cancer resources recently, and Ellen Davis' book is by far my favourite. I was getting pretty bogged down trying to understand Seyfried's work, but she translates it very well and puts it into terms that a layperson can understand and implement.

She did a really great webinar on terry talks nutrition about a year ago. it's on youtube too https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=in-4MGv-WBU

Walnut, thanks for those new resources, if they are pitched to the average reader I will add them to my list on using Ketogenic diets with standard of care treatment. My favorite book now is Keto for Cancer http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?t=478439. Because Miriam has so much practical experience, she includes advice on what to eat in special cases of dealing with side effects at the same time, and working with your cancer team.

Dr Fung’s new series on cancer is good for the explanations of why, like Dr Edes series, but more in depth, and long. He had to break it off at 15 parts because the new book will keep him busy, he will continue the series later.
So much is going on in this area, but have to be cautious that the promise is not overstated.

Two new women integrative Oncologists I have added as resources:

Keto Oncologist , Jocelyn Tan M.D. author of Ketogenic Diets and Cancer: Emerging Evidence, Feb 2017 . Many blog posts and resources on her website. She updates a list of Clinical Trials with the Ketogenic Diet. Wide-ranging yet simple “Open Letter from Oncologist to Patients” https://www.ketooncologist.com/en_U...ter-oncologist/

Oregon Integrative Oncology. https://www.oregonio.com Dr. Dawn Lemanne, her newest talk, https://youtu.be/W_diITmOeCM others articles on website.
Slide deck from a 2017 version of same talk “Cancer Restriction to Enhance Cancer Therapy”

[lost all the links when copied those, I’ll add back a few, but if interested in whole document, PM an email]
