Default Nutritional Ketosis

I thought this might be interesting for people contemplating carb cycling.

http://www.fathead-movie.com/index....ot-necessarily/

Check out the video.

Dr. Phinny says it takes 1-2 weeks to get back into nutritional ketosis.

Nancy, I posted Jimmy's blog here and have had some interesting discussions.

http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?t=444197

PS I ordered the meter and some strips, I also have a glucose meter and strips. I am going to try it and see what happens.... I am interested in knowing just how much protein it takes for me to go out what the recommended range is.

Definitely, Arlene! I'm going to be following you and Jimmy's progress.

I've never registered on the urine strips. Maybe I had been eating too much protein?

After a lot of carbs? Yeah, probably 4-5 days for most of the people doing carb cycling, who are also the same people doing a lot of weight lifting.

Longer for someone who just happens to have a "cheat day" from a ketogenic diet.

Listen to the podcast, Dr. Phinny describes what he found. It sounds like it's a little harder to get to the levels of ketosis they're describing.

To first get into what he calls "nutritional ketosis" - at least 2 and more likely 4 to 6 weeks.

If you take even a one day holiday from low carb eating - 1 to 2 weeks to get back into nutritional ketosis.

If he is right, then this is a real eye opener for me about ketosis. No wonder I never turned those stupid strips purple.

You should have seen the level of ketosis I had with uncontrolled raging diabetes. It totally dwarfs anything you could ever get from nutritional ketosis. Powerful stuff.

I never used the strips, relied on smell. NO MORE INFO HERE....LOL I have not listened to the recording yet, I am not home, but it sounds almost impossible to get to the point he wants us to be!

The problem is that its actually very hard to follow a high-fat diet in civilization due to food availability and everything being low-fat, fat reduced, fat free etc etc.

Even some fools at my local farmers market were advertising sausages as "reduced fat" - sigh.

Another example here in london we have millions of fried chicken shops, consisting of fried chicken with batter and french fries, this is probably the most insulinogenic meal you could ever have.

Meanwhile ive never seen a shop selling like, pork belly with fatty sauce and salad.

According to Jimmy's blood ketone levels, it only took him 4 days to reach nutritional ketosis.

I haven't seen the link so I don't know what "nutritional ketosis" is and I don't understand why it would take 2-6 weeks to get back into ketosis after a cheat.
But I can tell you from my personal experience that when I eat enough carbs to get me out of ketosis, it usually takes me 3 days, 4 max to get back into ketosis. 3 - 4 days of clean eating and lots of water. But I also exercise 5-6 days a week so that may have something to do with it. I know the signs my body gives me when I'm in ketosis so I don't have to rely on keto-stix. When I do use them they always turn pink or purple.

It definitely depends on how many extra carbs one had and how much exercise one does.

It might be something that changes from one person to the next. Once you're keto-adapted, you don't spill ketones much, if at all, so you have to test the blood instead of the urine.

Do keep us up to date on your progress. I almost ordered the meter and strips this weekend but balked at the price.

This was a fantastic Podcast/video to listen to. My copy of the "the Art and Science ....." was swiped off a train seat while I went to the bathroom sometime ago, but I do remember thinking the book fantastic. I guess I'll buy it again asI was only half thru.

Oh boy, it's a struggle to really eat high fat. But considering all the work the inuit went through, I guess I shouldn't complain.
