Default Cholesterol Blood Test Results

Over on this thread (http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?t=465151) I posted a whole bunch of blood test results.

The Cholesterol numbers are NOT good.

*Lipid Panel w/ reflex to Direct LDL/A*
Value __ Ref. Range __
Cholesterol, Total 263 __ 100 - 199 __ 165% H
Triglycerides 84 __ 0 - 149 __ 56%
HDL Cholesterol 47 __ 39 - __
VLDL Cholesterol Cal 17 __ 5 - 40 __ 34%
LDL Cholesterol Calc 199 __ 0 - 99 __ 201% H
T Chol/HDL Ratio 5.6 __ 0 - 5 __ 112% H

You'll notice the LDL is..... 199! WTH?!!

Low carb guru's might say, "Well a lot of that is VLDL which doesn't count." Unfortunately I got that measured too and it was only 17*.

What's going on here? I know some will say "Don't worry about it" but it's too late. I'm worried.

Also, other than taking drugs, what can I do about it?

* At least I think it was measured. I wanted it measured. The description says "VLDL Cholesterol Cal" which has me wondering if they actually measured it or if the SOP is to calculate it from Tri's, LDL and HDL. If that's the case then someone is going to have to tell me the CPT code I need or I'm going to go find it myself and have the test done.

Read ^^ Why LDL may go up on LC!

LC gurus will say it is the large fluffy type, not VLDL. And you learn the particle size from an NMR, which you can order yourself from Direct Labs or wait, discuss these results and if you still feel you need an NMR, Dr Westman will send it in to LipoScience.

Your Trigs are near perfect in Dr Westman's book, your HDL good for a guy but can improve the longer you stay LC (there are other natural ways to improve HDL in the book...and I put them on this forum somewhere recently**).
VLDL is estimated off your Trigs, and a low number means lower risk of heart disease...yours is good. So in the crazy world of LC, your tests are not "not good".

HDL rises slowly with LC. In addition to quit smoking and a LC diet, Suggestions from Cholesterol Clarity to raise HDL naturally, one of the best ways is to consume more dietary fat, inc. healthy saturated fats, such as coconut Oil, butter, full-fat meats, and mono oils like olive oil. Addditionally HDL responds to regular exercise, reduced alcohol consumption, and if you are up to it, intermittent fasting of 16 hours.

Ps: some will choose to lower the "high" by conventional standards LDL back down. You can stay LC and do that if you decide.http://www.lowcarbdietitian.com/blo...-own-experience

We're discussing this in another thread. Apparently about 30% of low carbers will get much more LDL when in ketosis and eating lots of fat.

Is it bad? Well, no one knows for sure, but the suspicion is it may not be good. The fix is to lower sat. fat, raise veggie carbs a bit. No, not to low fat levels, but not to the sometimes extremely high levels that low carbers go to. 65% fat instead of 80%. No coconut oil in your coffee. That sort of thing.
