Question Anyone do a "carb blowout day" occasionally?

Well, today is day #9 on LC eating for me. I went camping Fri-Sat-Sun, which included some incidental hiking, and I've decided to start a 20-30 minute daily regimen of fast walking around my neighborhood. So far, I actually seem to have lost about 6 to 9 pounds (can't quite decided where I was when I started). Some of that is probably water weight, but I'm still pleased enough with my results that I'm going to try to continue this WOE.

Anyway, my question is this: Does anyone here do, or has anyone heard of, "shocking your system with carbs" every three weeks or so? Reason I ask is, I have a friend who's a policeman in his mid-50s who's eating LC as suggested by his doctor. He's doing it for health reasons, to get his blood sugar and blood pressure under control. His regimen includes one day every three weeks during which he slams himself with carbs! Biscuits for breakfast, burger and fries for lunch, tortillas with chips and salsa at his fave Mexican place for dinner! He looks forward to these times, obviously, and he's done it twice so far (he says gleefully that next time he's going to the Outback and just ordering three sweet potatoes!). Now, I've never read about this anywhere in regard to the formal "Atkins diet."

But I must say, he has lost 22 pounds in six weeks doing this. He has also eaten green beans throughout his diet, has about three cups of coffee per day with cream and a sugar sub, and still drinks diet sodas with NutraSweet. He will also occasionally eat fried chicken strips from Chick-Fil-A or KFC (he says he will sometimes scrape off some of the breading).

I'm not real sure what the explanation is as to why this makes the diet supposedly more effective ... seems like he said something about resetting the body so that the carb-deprivation process can begin again more effectively. Dunno.

Anyone heard of this? Anyone do something like this? It sounds great, and it gives one something to look forward to. I'd like to try it, but would like to hear some other testimonials first ...

Default Whoops.... some how I did this a new thread.... EEK

I've heard of "planned cheat days" I wonder if this is the same? I'm SO very tempted to have a cheat day right now. I'm dying for ice cream and a Bic Mac would be heaven... LOL

I know it will take two days at least to get back into fat burning mode, but since I've not burned any fat in over a week....*shrug* I guess the worse thing that could happen is I could gain.

Anyone else do this?

I'm too afraid to cheat. I may not be able to stop if I do, plus I'd only be cheating myself if I do. I would rather stick to my plan.

Yep I do this, and have found it always helps me get the scale moving downward again. Go figure.

Well my experience has been a scale stall for about 6 months now but I keep losing inches (I do workout though) so I feel I am doing great and feel healthy.

I cheat (or chose a high carb meal - not day) for special occassions but usually am quite sick within a few hours so it is hard to say if it is worth it.

The taste over my stomach cramps and bloat for the next two days.

Just my input.

I think the best way to do the blow-out is to do a blow-out hour, not day. So basically one meal, eat whatever.. pancakes, pizza, etc.. and then when that hour is up, your back on the wagon. This way you get enough carbs to "shock" your system, but you don't go overboard with eating bad food.

There IS another LC diet plan that alters the carbs throughout the week...I read it "somewhere" and cannot for the life of me remember its name or where I read it....

You stagger your calories and carbs dailey...and once each week you basically HOG-OUT....but the net results are better then if you had a strict regimented daily caloric boundary.

Or something like that!
Someone here will know what I am referring to, I am sure, and clarify it for you.

Me...I stick to strict induction foods...
Best to all;
Jake

Default That sort of sounds like the CAD method...

Where you eat LC for breakfast and Lunch but get a Reward Meal (RM) for dinner. Although i don't think I would want to do that everyday, I am sure I would eat almost nothing for breakfast and lunch and have a carb feast at night... which would be almost identical to my old eating habbits that got me all this extra weight. Speaking of which, I need to scrounge up some breakfast yet today....

What you are talking about Risha is CAD or CALP and there are some rules. That I couldn't handle.

Like: you can have a cup of coffee but it must be drunken within 15 minutes - no artificial sweetners or diet sodas unless during your reward meal - no snacking just 3 meals and the other two are low carb - eat your reward meal within 1 hour

CAD is almost anything in the reward meal and CALP should start with a salad and be equal parts of protien/carbs/fat

Anyone can correct me if i'm wrong here.

I THINK THE DIET YOU R ARE TALKING ABOUT IS THE CARBOHYDRATES ADDICTS DIET...THAT IS THE ONE WHERE U HAVE AN HOUR TO EAT WHATEVER U WANT..

I think there is something to this and am experimenting, myself. When I have a fairly big cheat, I will lose right after that. I'm not sure if it is extra carbs or extra calories. If you check out the thread in the General Low Carb list, the one that mentions messing up your metabolism, sorry can't remember what it says exactly...it talks about this somewhat.

I don't see myself ever pigging out on just carbs. Even eating a 1/2 a sweet potato has sent me into a blood sugar crash that I don't want to experience again. That's why I'm looking into whether it's carbs or calories. I won't be able to post anymore on this until next weekend as I'm going on a week long retreat.

We'll see!

Good luck,

Amy

Whoa! Thirteen replies in an hour! This is one heck of an active forum

Myself, I'm tempted to give this a try -- the one full day every three weeks thing. This diet is working fairly well for me so far. I've experienced some weight loss, and if it continues as I hope it will I will have lost over 10 pounds in induction! Not half bad, if it works out that way.

The best "side-effect" I've found so far to LC eating is that I never feel "gorged," tired and listless after lunch or in the evening anymore. In fact, weird as this might sound, it's almost a matter of pride not eating high-carb foods. Like teenage abstinence or something ...

Good eating,
