If you haven't already read it, I can recommend Undoctored: Why Health Care Has Failed You and How You Can Become Smarter Than Your Doctor by Dr William Davis

I'm also looking forward to reading Dr Aseem Malhotra's new book which is due to be published January 2019

Quote:
A Bitter Pill: A Doctor's Insight into Medical Corruption

Global health systems are forecast to collapse in the next few years. Two things are driving ever-increasing demand. The first is the escalating burden of chronic disease, caused by entirely preventable lifestyle related illnesses. The second is over treatment. Millions of people are taking drugs and undergoing tests and operations that will give them no benefit and they don't even know it--not because we don't have the scientific evidence but because it's being sequestered from them. Collusion between doctors, politicians, respected medical institutions, 'charities' and medical journals, for financial gain, has resulted in an epidemic of misinformation with devastating consequences for our health worldwide. This is the story of the author's own first-hand experience in not only discovering the truth behind our health (including his own) but taking on and exposing the manipulations of those vested interests that are benefiting from an increasingly fat and sick society. This story will also expose the attempts to silence those who call for greater transparency, including the author's own experience of personal attacks and attempts to destroy his career. The system is broken. Dr. Malhotra's mission is to fix it!

Seconded. Dr. Davis has been responsible for a lot of my cynicism

Standard treatment for low testosterone is testosterone injection for the rest of one's life, commonly called HRT. That is, if a doc eventually diagnoses him with that, but at 25yo? No way is that gonna happen. Instead, docs will refer him to a psycho babbler cuz it's all in his head, right?

Knowing what I do now, I am sure his lab tests show plenty of testosterone, and you are totally right about the course of his “treatment.” It’s there, but it’s not getting into his cells and operating the way it should.

Here's another advice, always always always get a second opinion. It used to be that this second opinion was gotten from another doc. Problem with that in this era is that all docs are trained exactly the same, and draw the same conclusions. There's no possibility of a different diagnosis when any doc is given the exact same information. On the other hand, when that information is incomplete, the possibility of a false diagnosis, or multiple false diagnosis (cuz it's totally possible none of them get it right) goes right up to near 100%. So, in this era, we get this second opinion from the mass of information available to us with a few clicks, and a whole lotta readin and discussin and sharin and some experimentin.

Spot on, and the more deeply one tries to find a “specialist” the more narrow-minded and rigid are the criteria to get treatment. If you don’t match the little template they have in their head of the things they know how to fix: it’s not their problem.

My husband is 83 & takes no prescriptions. He used to take a statin until he read Wheat Belly & Grain Brain. He's in better shape than I am (at 65) because I have diabetes, but I also don't take prescription meds.

So often treatment & advice depends on which doctor you see. Last year I went to an orthopedic specialist for my knee injury & he didn't really answer my questions, nor did he prescribe PT. Now my other knee is having problems, so my doc was going to refer me to an orthopedic PA - an idea I like. I've noticed that PAs seem to be more willing to answer questions.

But that got switched & I'll be seeing the same specialist as last year. But now I'm prepared - I've read the list of treatments VA will pay for (includes PT) & I know what questions to ask.

Thirded. I am following the undoctored protocol he advises in his book, pretty much as written. Highly recommended reading.

If it doesn't, there's always The Book Depository. It's a UK bookstore that ships worldwide for free. I've placed several orders with them, and have always been pleased with the service.

re: Dr. Aseem Malhotra - He's got a few books published in 2017 according to goodreads! Do you know the subject (title?) of his next in 2019? Looking at the book depository listing for A Bitter Pill, it's preorder with 116 days to go, so maybe that the one?
