Default a few questions about underactive thyroid...

i believe im speaking of hypothyroidism?

well, i am severely constipated, absolutely nothing will work. i went to my dr. to have her refer me to a gi for a colonoscopy, and she took some blood and said she was going to test my thyroid, as an underactive thyroid can cause severe constipation.

as i am researching this, and reading about more symptoms of hypothyroidism, i would not be shocked in the slightest if this was the case.

so...t4 and t3? is that what they give you for an underactive thyroid? anyone have this affliction, and if so, what do you take?

im wondering about the side effects of these drugs. did anyone experience weight gain? hate to be shallow, but...i work so dang hard to keep it off!

any hoo, maybe some one could give me a breif overview here. thanks in advance!

Yup, it can do that.

I think the stickied FAQ at the top of the forum might help you answer a lot of your questions. The typical treatment is they'll give you T4 which your body can convert to T3 as needed, some people take both in the form of porcine thyroid and they like that. To me, the T3 was too strong and made me feel hyper. It is quite hard to find a doctor that'll prescribe the "natural" thyroid hormone.

Taking thyroid medication will NOT cause weight gain, in fact, if you're hypothyroid it'll probably cause weight loss. Thyroid hormone has been around for a looong time. I wouldn't even call it a drug, it's a hormone.

Good luck!
