Default Who to see for diagnosis of PCOS?

For all you gals that have diagnosed with PCOS... who diagnosed you and how? Did you see your OB/gyne or did you see an endocrinologist? What type of tests did you take?

I personally would look to at minimum an endocrinologist. It would be even better if you could find a reproductive endocrinologist. DH and I had all kinds of tests run including:
sperm count for DH
CBC
Comprehensive metabolic panel
Liver functions
Thyroid
Hormone levels for FSH/LH/Testosterone
Pelvic ultrasound
Lipid panel
Insulin level
That is all I can think of at the moment. Good luck to you.

Thanks, ladies. I have already been to an endo who said all my tests were normal. A lot of stuff was way high in the range (insulin in particular), but within the range nonetheless.

I've called a few reproductive endos (who have PCOS info on their websites), but they don't want to see you unless you want infertility treatments.

I'm not sure what to try next.

What sort of treatment are you looking for? Do you want met to lower insulin resistance? Do you want cholesterol meds to treat hyperlipidemia?

I'd really like to try the Metformin to help with insulin resistance. I'm doing low-carb but still not losing weight very fast, and having some hypoglycemia.

I think you need to find a doctor that knows and understands about PCOS. I was first dx'd by my obgyn after two years of going with problems (and having the symptoms plus cysts!). I was fed up with them, as once I was dx'd, they gave me a prescription of Met, told me that would drop the weight right off of me and I'll be fine and that was it. I left in tears and went off to find another doctor.

I actually ended up at a fertility specialist's office. The staff was very knowledgable about PCOS and explained things and helped me a lot. Some endos, as well as some obgyn's, will know jack-nothing about PCOS. I say call around to different docs. If you have the insurance, visit different ones until you find a good one.

However, Met is not a magic pill. Although it's helped some, the weight didn't fall off and I still have a lot of issues with IR.

I was diagnosed by my Ob/Gyn.
It really is based on what the doctor knows about PCOS.
A RE would be great for a diagnosis, but is not necessarily needed.
