I just went to back to school night at my daughter's high school, where her health teacher informed the parents that diabetes was caused by not exercising enough. I bit my tongue. Should I have made a nuisance of myself and tried to talk to this person who was so sure of herself?

Why bother? This person obviously thinks of herself as the expert. There's no way you would have ever convinced her.

I wouldn't. First, it's not good to challenge the teacher in this type of setting. I may have voice my opinion in private, or at least asked for her sources....but again, in private. (of course, in my case I'd also state that I was a RN and noted this is not exactly accurate)

I definitly would talk to my child after and informed them that there are many theoreys about what causes diabetes and let him/her know that I thought the teacher was dead wrong in believing this theorey!

Personally, I would have said something. I would have mentioned various factors that contributed to my familial disposition of contracting diabetes. My sister exercised alot before she became diabetic. My mom never exercised. My mom was 57 when she became diabetic. My sister was 46 when she contracted hers. Seriously, I would have respectfully and intellectually conversed with her on this subject and see what her explanation would be. Then, I would give her my theory as to what happened. I do believe that exercise is helpful in stabilizing insulin but more is needed to keep insulin stabil on a regular basis. I would have said something ( knowing me )

Go here and print out this transcript of a speech by Dr. Rosedale.
http://patty-phillips.onlinestorage...linEffects.html
Put a note on it so she will know that this was a speech followed by a question session. The answers to the questions do not read very well since they were "off the cuff" and not made for someone to read since they will jump around as the Doctor thinks in mid sentance of a better way to answer the question.
Then quietly see that the teacher gets it and hope she will read it.
If she reads it and does not believe what a Medical Doctor says who is considered a world class expert on the subject, she may be hopeless.

My daughter's teacher is willing to discuss low carb diets in her health class, and I need a short piece that describes the basics of low carb that high school students wouldn't have difficulty with. Does anyone have any suggestions. All the articles I've collected are too long and scientific.

Here's a link to a comparison of a lot of the plans out there. You might be able to find something here: http://www.lowcarb.ca/atkins-diet-a...lans/index.html

Good luck!
