Lightbulb Let's talk about sardines for a moment: eat for 3$/day

Let's talk about sardines for a moment, they are oft forgotten by dieters.

Scary? ... I can sympathize, but a human could live on just four cans / day! Not only live, but live well.** They are a standby for surviving tough times. A prospector friend of mine used to keep a can in his jeep while out in the boonies. More than one time I have been tempted to try these for a few weeks just to see. Keep in mind your sardines, little fishes or kippers can be tinned in more than one way or flavored so there is plenty of variety

** Withs some Extra source of added fat calories like CO and/or the oil, in the oil packed fish.

I don't think with these Mercury is an issue?

I actually bought a can at the grocery this weekend, although I still have not worked up the courage to try them. I know they were a staple of a lot of diets pre-refrigeration but still, knowing what they are, its a mental block. I am going to work up the courage though, have friends that love them, might be another new food I can add to my new WOE.

I like these little fishies but I am kind of a sissy about eating them. They have to be headless and I pick most of the big bones out.

I would eat them more often but they make the kitchen stink and other people in the house complain about this.

If you take the bones out they wouldn't be crunchy!~ (Monty Python)

Besides, that's where the calcium is.

Thanks for tip... I will have to give them a whirl. I've eaten weirder.

I am having some right now with a little brown rice, garlic and Thi HOT sauce. The Garlic helps with the fishy smell -- so does vinegar.

I have eaten these in the past, way past... with my dad ... and on toast.

This is really good information to know though. Because they keep for a long time and ultra healthy.

Thanks for the tip!

I always have a few cans (16 right now) in my pantry. Anytime I can't think what to have for lunch, sardines fill the bill - mash 'em up with a little mayo, and serve with a side salad. And yeah, they ARE hard to find packed in olive oil, but they are out there although a little pricier.

Default Water or oil? Water or oil?

I go for the water packed, WM has them again for now. I have to be careful though, people sometimes mix the oil packed tins in with those packed in water and the cans likely look identical. The "fish steaks" are good too, so are some brands of kippers.

I heard about using smoked anchovies recently to give things a umami flavor, I bet sardines would work like that too.

I have a can in the pantry that I bought one day while shopping hungry. They're packed in olive oil and it said they were headless and I think it said boneless too.

Anyway, that was about 3 months ago and I still haven't had the courage to open them up. Not really sure if you just eat them out of the can or make something with them.

I saw the suggestion to mash them up and add some mayo...I might have to try that over the weekend.

What I really like are the cans of little smoked clams!

Yeah - I know, and there are probably some other good minerals too. Which is why I said I was a sissy for not eating them.

I think I will also try mashing them up in mayonnaise and vinegar and perhaps adding some crunchy celery to go with the crunchy bones.

My dh loves the sardines packed in tomato sauce. Fry some diced onion in a hot skillet, and when the onions softens, add the tin of tomato sardines and cook til piping hot.

He used to eat it with a crusty loaf of french bread or a bowl of rice, but I've trained him to eat it with some crunchy veggies instead.
