Default Hi!

Hi!

I'm a 30-something man from Finland. Originally I took up keto in 2010 or 2011 when I found out it could help with epilepsy as the meds were making me miserable and fat (I put on roughly 50lbs in a couple of years) and didn't even prevent the seizures. Epilepsy has been in complete remission ever since, even with moderate carbs (about 100-150 grams) and I lost the weight and then some.

Currently I'm paleoish (plus dairy) with loads of eggs and beef. I do enjoy my sugar and grains, but I very rarely have any at home, with the exception of putting a bit of sugar in espresso which I like bittersweet. That probably totals to about 1 tsp a day, if even that.

I don't have a weight goal anymore as such, but I'm looking to shed a couple of kilos of fat, and I don't care much whether that comes through weight loss or muscle gain and stable weight. Also, there's no hurry and I don't worry about it as long as I'm not putting on any fat.

Welcome Mattson
First a huge congratulations for putting your epilepsy in remission. Did your doctor suggest you try Keto or was that your own research?
You have found a great forum for LC information and support.
All the best,

Welcome to the forum and so happy you are in remission! I have type 1 diabetes and have had around 6 seizures from severe low blood sugar. The last one haunts me more than a year later, as it occurred about 60 seconds after parking my car, and as it occurred I couldn't get on to grass from sidewalk fast enough. I fell back, keeping my head up for a few last seconds (had backpack on), before my skull crashed into cement knocking me out......thank God I wasn't still driving!
Best of luck to you! This forum is very friendly and supportive and above all, scientific

Thanks! I only have one scar to remind me of bashing my head on the desk, the rest of them have been in more hospitable environments, such as bed

And yeah, I did my own research as we have a system called Current Care Guidelines which is a kind of a concise procedure for diagnosis and treatment (read: medication). There isn't even a mention of keto, not even for children although for them there's plenty of science. Basically, it states that for adults (I was more than 20 it was diagnosed) it's going to be (sodium) valproate and good luck after that. So yeah, the doctors aren't basically neither taught nor allowed to recommend keto (if you do, you're risking your licence since, you know, it's not evidence-based and fat will probably kill you).

Sure you know by now that Dr Eric Kosoff is the man and John Hopkins Hospital is the place for all good diet related Epilepsy work in the US.
In May they published: "Establishing an Adult Epilepsy Diet Center: Experience, efficacy and challenges" (no surprise, the challenge is long term adherence) but this is evidence
https://jhu.pure.elsevier.com/en/pu...nce-efficacy-an

A good talk by Dr Kosoff at the Metabolic Therapeutics conference on new topics in the field, inc. adult treatment: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1PqjdOz_lUw

This was the first conference of its kind so not well known, but all the talks relate to Ketogenic diets and are interesting. http://metabolictherapeuticsconfere...m/2016-archive/
Dr Kosoff is a good speaker and you can find a few other talks of his on YouTube.

He made an interesting comment on the 250 centers in US for Dietary treatment of Epilepsy. When US News & World report ranks hospitals, having such a center adds points to the hospitals score.
