Default How to keep Avocados for a long time

Google has a lot of interesting tips for keeping avocados for a long time.

Obviously, rubbing the unused cut part with lemon or lime juice and wrapping tightly in plastic wrap keeps them from going brown, but....

If you buy them hard and store them in the fridge they will ripen really slowly. I do that and only keep one at a time on the counter to ripen quicker. I've been able to keep them for 2 weeks in the fridge and they still come out nice and green inside, instead of turning over-ripe brown.

They are on sale 5/.99 this week and I would like to buy a bunch but I have the problem of them turning brown and yucky. I was leaving them on the counter until they softened slightly and then refrigerated them. I take it this is wrong?

I researched this because I want to start eating more avocados.
The best answer I found online was pouring 1/2 inch of water over the guacamole before covering it with the lid or saran wrap and placing in fridge. Just pour the excess water off when ready to re-use, and mix a little and serve. The water barrier prevents oxidation.

Perfect timing..I bought six at Costco yesterday. 5 in fridge, one on counter. But "water over guacamole" like an old Simon Garfunkel song...never heard of it and makes perfect sense! Thanks,

Cover it with water
Wow who knew I could have saved all of those 1/2 Avocados I've wasted since Atkins said to eat only 1/2 per day and then the second half always turns brown by the next day.

Thanks for this tip. I'm going to try both tips. Man, I wish they were that cheap around here. I'm having to pay 50¢ apiece for them on sale!! They have stayed high in Texas for over a year and I can't figure that out. Produce out of Mexico usually makes them dirt cheap. Only saw them 3 for a dollar one time this past year in my town in Central TX.
