Default Lowering Cholesterol with South Beach?

My husband was just diagnosed with high cholesterol. Heart disease runs in his, and my families really bad. Our family doctor prescribed him the TLC diet, which is very low fat. I don't really feel ok with this recommendation....low fat, 6-11 servings of grains, only 5oz meat a day, only egg whites, no avacados, limit olive oil, etc.

Has anyone had success lowering cholesterol with the South Beach Diet?

Thanks

The ONLY time in my life when my cholesterol levels were normal was after following Atkins for about 8 months, that is why I am back. My levels have not yet lowered but I will be retested again in May. I have been following Atkins again since December 28th.

Here's to the journey,
Debi

Thanks Debi,

We actually had been following Atkins for the last three weeks. I have done both South Beach and Atkins. I find South Beach a little easier to follow, but I will do whatever program to help my husband. He is only 200lb's and 31 years old.

SB is a good plan, I think. The proteins consumed are the lower fat ones, as well as the dairy too. Things like oatmeal and beans are also supposed to be good for lowering cholestral and they are both allowed on SB. The only thing to do is give it a try and see what happens.

Hi Summer,
Yes, I do think that your DH can lower is numbers on SB. He doesn't have an overweight body so that is not his issue.
I can tell you that years ago before I lost my weight and found SB, I too, had a high total number at 233. I did one thing only and that was to eat oatmeal for my brekkie daily, with berries in it...and lowered my total number by 58 pts. My doctor was very impressed.

If your DH does eat any wheat at all, it'd be a very good idea for him to just stop that. There is info on this forum that wheat is an issue for many with cholesterol problems.
Yes, I am going agaisnt the advice of my own plan in pushing the "whole grain wheat" holy grail....its just not all that!
Ya know?

Thanks Judy! My dh bad cholesterol is only 140, so it is not too high yet. We actually have not been eating wheat because we have two children with gluten intolerances. I will have him start eating lots of oatmeal .

Great ...just not the instant stuff as the good fiber is taken out in processing.
Go for old fashioned, rolled or steel cut oats.

I tried to find where it said how much a serving of oatmeal was, but I cannot find it. How much oatmeal is considered a serving?
