Oh yes, Margerie, most of us here have felt exactly the way you did. The trouble with the the "carbs good fat bad" diet is that it makes you hungry, tired, depressed and irrational. Oh yes, I've been on Weight Watchers and I can tell you, I was struggling 24/7: I was anxious, and fighting depression and cravings all the way. Only tenacity and being brainwashed that "this is really good for me!" kept me on plan for about 4 months. And when I fell off that wagon... well, you know the rest. I really think that the "carbs good fat bad" mantra leads to a downward spiral that more often than not ends in a mess of bad food habits. And when you get there, you feel like crap, you're no longer rational, but still chanting The Mantra.

Congratulations on your change of life. It is not a big suprise how you originally thought about fat and carbs. The US government has fed us a bunch of crap. Glad to see that is starting to change.

Margerie, I understand the shame you felt and how it made you reluctant to see your doctor. I also understand the addiction to fast food and the feelings of hopelessness you experienced as a result of eating them. I was so inspired by your story that I ordered Why We Get Fat. I've put off buying it, thinking it would just be a rehash of GCBC, but sometimes it helps to seek encouragement wherever we can. Coming to this forum is a good idea, especially when the fears about low carb dieting kick in. Stick around, I think you'll like it here.

Why we get fat is definitely covering the same ground as GCBC, but I was glad I read it first because it's a lot easier to absorb the message. GCBC is fascinating but it's also really dense and takes a lot more of my time to read the same amount of pages!

The beauty of this type of eating, I find is that it's family friendly, no strange " beans " or special foods. Just your simple everyday foods that you can get anywhere. We can't all shop in specialist food shops, but who can't get eggs and tins of tuna. Steaks are great, but belly pork strips are just as good. It's easy to find something to eat when your out and about. Eating at celebrations is a breeze. i.e. tomorrow, were having smoked salmon crostini, roast turkey with pork and herb stuffing, peas, carrots, potatoes, sprouts and gravy. I will eat the crostini because I could do with the oil and fish, but say no to the roast potatoes as the rest is plenty for me. I will drink wine, its a celebration meal after all. This is a great way of eating... Who though that you could " graze " the fridge and still eat healthy!
