On the subject of magnesium, people always say that too much gives you loose stools. I've taken up to 3g of citrate in a go and it has never ever done this. What does that mean? I don't notice a calming effect or better sleep or any positive side effect off it either, I just keep taking 500mg of it because I don't reach the RDA.

I've wondered about that myself as I have the same reaction, or rather lack of reaction...the only reference I've seen for people who have an "atypical" reaction to lots of magnesium is in relation to adrenal fatigue or low cortisol.

still don't understand the connection (although I do have low cortisol) as I have only found the references in passing but still looking into it.

But you weigh 146lbs.
Krispin suggests you require 5 to 10 milligrams per day per kilo of ideal body weight or 2.5 to 4.5 milligrams per day per pound of ideal body weight.

140 (ideal weight) x 2.5=3.5g MAGNESIUM

But how much magnesium is in a magnesium citrate tablet.
Magnesium Citrate Elemental Mag = 16%,
How much of that magnesium is bioavailable.
Magnesium Citrate Bioavailability = 90%

So for each 100mg magnesium citrate you take you get 16mg magnesium of which 90% is bioavailable. =14.4mg

the rates for other forms of magnesium are set out here.

I think it depends on the type. Magnesium citrate & other -ates don't cause as many problems as magnesium oxide.

A little conversion hint. You can ask google to convert things for you.

Try typing this into your google search: 1 kilo to pounds 1 kilogram = 2.20462262 pounds

Or 1 kilo to oz

Well I find it tastes better than straight out of the tap.
I'm drinking more water now than I was which is good for me.
Bear in mind that it's only 3 tablespoons of Milk of Magnesia in 4 litres of water

If you are not bothered about correcting over acid urine you could reduce the alkalinity by adding a slice of lemon to the glass.

It's 500mg actual magnesium, excluding the chelate. But I need 3.5g you say? Thats a LOT of magnesium! Isn't there a U-shaped curve with magnesium? As in too much is just as bad as too little? I remember reading a comment on that somewhere, but a quick google scholar search yields nothing, only cases of hypermagnesia in renal failure patients.

You'll know when you've taken too much magnesium. You'll have loose stools.

It's not my formula it comes from Krispin
It's best taken in small amounts through the day (that's one of the reasons why adding it to your drinking water helps) It's also best absorbed with food, that is unless you try the transdermal route.

If you crave dark chocolate, you are definitelly deficient in magnesium, that's why you crave it in the first place so you should indulge the cravings.
