Daikon recall
Didn't somebody have trouble with Daikon recently?
HEALTH HAZARD ALERT - FRESH DAIKON MAY CONTAIN
SHIGELLA
OTTAWA, June 26, 2001 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency(CFIA) is
warning the public not to consume fresh daikon produced by Kim's Farm,
Surrey, B.C. as it may be contaminated with Shigella.
The fresh daikon was produced and packed by Kim's Farm, Surrey, B.C.
and distributed to British Columbia and Alberta. The following distributors in
British Columbia may have received affected product: Pacific Produce
Company Ltd.,Van-Whole Produce Ltd. and T & T Supermarket Inc.
Consumers who have purchased fresh daikon on or after June 15, 2001 to
present should enquire at the retail outlet where they purchased the daikon
to verify if the store received the recalled product.
The product is being voluntary recalled from the retail level by the producer.
Shigella infection can cause diarrhea (which may be bloody), fever, nausea,
and vomiting. Illness usually lasts from 4 to 14 days. In some persons,
especially very young and very old people and people with compromised
immune systems, the diarrhea can be more severe. Infection can occur after
eating and drinking food and water that is contaminated with Shigella and it
can be passed from person to person.
There have been no reported illnesses associated with this product.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is monitoring the effectiveness of
the recall.
