My Lab Test Result - (Need Help)
Personally I am a carb-lover. I don't like sweeties but I do love carbs - rice - pasta, french fries you name it. During March I planned to start doing low carbs.
Just before I started my low carb journey, I took a blood test and below is the result:
Weight: 76kg
Total Cholesterol: 158 mg/dL (4.11 mmol/L)
HDL: 37 mg/dL (0.96 mmol/L)
LDL: 77 mg/dL (2.01 mmol/L)
Total Chol/HDL: 4.3
Triglyceride: 219 mg/dL (2.47 mmol/L)
Fasting Glucose: 9x mg/dL (I lost the exact data)
3 months after my low carb, I took another blood test on June:
Weight: 68kg
Total Cholesterol: 192.3 mg/dL (5.00 mmol/L)
HDL: 36 mg/dL (0.93 mmol/L)
LDL: 121 mg/dL (3.15 mmol/L)
Total Chol/HDL: 5.4
Triglyceride: 177 mg/dL (2.0 mmol/L)
Fasting Glucose: 92 mg/dL (5.1 mmol/L)
After that, I introduced back carbs, but I consume moderately. Normally only one out of my three meals have refined carbs. I eat significantly less carbs comparing to before, and I eat 2 tablespoons of virgin coconut oil per day. I took another test on mid-August (2.5 months later):
Weight: 66kg
Total Cholesterol: 193 mg/dL (5.01 mmol/L)
HDL: 43 mg/dL (1.11 mmol/L)
LDL: 133 mg/dL (3.46 mmol/L)
Total Chol/HDL: 4.5
Triglyceride: 85 mg/dL (0.96 mmol/L)
Fasting Glucose: 92 mg/dL (5.1 mmol/L)
I also know that since my triglyceride is now below 100 mg/dL, I should use another equation to calculate my LDL:
LDL = TC/1.19 + TG/1.9 - HDL/1.1 - 38
And my new LDL would be 156.52 mg/dL, even higher.
Here are some of my questions/observations here:
1. My cholesterol is increasing since I start low carbing. My LDL used to be very low. In 5 months my LDL increased from 77 to 156, that's doubled. Should I worry about it?
2. I expected my HDL to increase but it actually doesn't increase significantly (LDL do increase double but my HDL only barely increase, from 37 to 43), any opinion here?
3. My triglyceride has decreased very significantly, I believe this is a very good sign and thanks to low carb, yeah!
4. My fasting glucose, although remain constant throughout the 5 months, is still pretty high. I read something online that fasting glucose over 90 mg/dL might not be a good thing. Since I started low carb I have been wishing it to go down, but it didn't. Need some advice here.
Thanks all!
