Definetly take some calories in before your workout. drink them if you cant handle the solid food in your stomach. coffee will give you the boost to train, but you really need some fuel to go with it!
i also just started early am workouts. i love it! its too dang muggy in the afternoon to do it. (my gym has no ac, ugh). i dont usually have anything to eat preworkout, my understanding that if you work out and/or do cardio on and empty stomach, you burn more fat...?

I guess I'm weird--I work out first thing in the morning (I get up at 4 a.m.) and I don't eat until my lunch at 12:30. I'm currently doing meat/egg whites/fat and I find that I have plenty of energy to lift and I'm not hungry. Since the body's favorite fuel is fat and I've got plenty of it I figure I'll give mine what it wants.
Here's an update since I started this thread back in April.
I've continued to workout in the mornings with good success. I do compounds exercies:
Squats
Bench,
Overhead Press
Rows
Deadlifts
Dips and chin/pullups
I'm getting by on coffee only. I set my coffee pot to 5am and pour a big drivers cup to take to the gym. Do my workout and I'm heading home by 6:15. My typical post workout breakfast is half a cup of quaker oats and two eggs. I live in a small town and I'm so close to the gym that I can get up at 5 and be there by 5:20. I can leave at 6:15, cook breakfast and still be in the shower by 6:45. As far as energy and nutrition? It's working for me.
