Thumbs up Good Vegetable Reference Sites

Bought a vegetable and now you don't know how to cook it?
Want to know how to select, store and prepare just about any vegetable?
Here are some great vegetable reference sites:

Produce Oasis includes shopping and storage guides, plus nutritional information for many vegetables.

Vegetable Buying Guide from What's Cooking America. Extensive lists, lots of photos and in-site links to further information, tips and recipes.

Cook's Thesaurus .. *excellent* for general info on many types of veggies and how to substitute for ones you can't find. Includes pictures and alternate names, which is very helpful. The site also has a useful guide to cooking tools & gadgets.

Seasonal Produce Guide : What Fruits and Vegetables are in Season? from the USDA

Thanks for posting this, Kristine. I took a quick look and notice they also have recipes with the nutrient info, which is a big help. There's one called Pumpkin Bisque that sound really good.

THanks Kristine, that's a great site. I've added it to my Bookmarks. I like that you can search by nutrient also, or fiber content.

Another good site is The Cook's Thesaurus. It's not just about vegetables, it's anything and everything to do with food and cooking. However, the Vegetable section is extensive, and it provides pictures as well as alternate names and suggested substitutions.

Yeah, I have that one bookmarked, too. I find it really handy for trying to translate alternative names for foods. If you don't know what a xuxu or a courgette is, you can figure it out there.

Wah!

I'm now using the Wegmen's site. They have a vegetable encyclopedia, a fruit encyclopedia, and a handy cooking techniques page.

I wasn't able to get the links above to work but I found an alternate sight. It gives selection, usage, cooking, and nutrition info for many veggies. I've found it to be very helpful.

The Cook's Thesaurus, and U of Minnesota links still work . The Wegman's Produce Guide had migrated to a new page on the site, so that link has been updated.

The Hormel site has been overhauled since the original link was posted in 2005. It's now oriented toward its commercial products and recipes; meanwhile the site itself is difficult to navigate, heavy on flash videos and pop-ups which load slowly on older computers (like mine ). That site has been removed from the list.

Produce Oasis
The veggie page had migrated to a different part of the site. I've added the new link to the OP list; it's a great site. Thank you

Another new link added is the Food Encyclopedia at WholeHealthMD.com. While it's not an all-inclusive list of every known vegetable (or fruit or herb, etc), the information for each food on the list *is* extensive.

Happy reading .. and cooking!
