MickiSue...do you listen to Dishing Up Nutrition? The Nutritional Weight and Wellness company on local radio?

Their latest episode on Holiday Heartburn! Gluten, sugar and dairy biggest offenders. One also talked about her baby's GERD, and at the end supplements to heal after eliminating the source of problems. They do three ad breaks in a short program (I fast forward past them) but they are for twin city classes and consults.

I've not listened to it, Janet, but will definitely listen to that one!

NPR roundup on the side effects of the PPIs:

http://www.npr.org/sections/health-...ey-disease-risk

Quote:
Schoenfeld says people should try other measures first to alleviate heartburn and indigestion. For example, people often feel better if they change their diet, stop smoking or reduce their alcohol consumption, he says. "There's other ways that people can feel better with indigestion or heartburn. They can change their diet," he says.

Now, there's a concept. Yet how many doctors suggest that?

The People's Pharmacy has had a number of posts on PPI's since the latest warning came out about Dementia. Here is a current round-up of all the concerns and helpfully, how to get off them.

I will also assume that it's linked to other issues of the brain, as well: depression, anxiety, etc. I know someone who was RX'ed Prilosec for acid reflux, and now is dealing with depression. BTW: I gave him some water with aloe in it to drink at dinner at my house.

The reflux presented as constant burping after meals. No burping after that meal. But what do I know, right?

Every pill comes with a price as we fight symptoms and not causes. Taking pills is too easy of a response and the real price to pay in health risks is never understood until it's too late in many cases. I'm not certain what stopped my GERD, and if I were simply trying to pinpoint the root cause, I'd start gradually adding grains, types of dairy, alcohol on a regular basis, sweets, and some of the many other things I no longer eat. I've been GERD free for over three years now, and it was one or more of those food sources that caused the issues. For me, GERD was one of the many symptoms that vanished by going low carb. PPIs were once a daily consumable, and something I'm happy to not require any longer.

Alert from People's Pharmacy:

https://www.peoplespharmacy.com/201...-early-symptoms

Can PPI Heartburn Drugs Harm Kidneys Without Early Symptoms?
A new study suggest that long-term use of potent acid-suppressing drugs (PPIs) may increase the risk of chronic kidney disease without much warning.

Some of the formatting on this website does not allow me to copy. Please read the information at above link, but this is the new study:
Quote:
The new research published in Kidney International (Feb. 22, 2017) is quite alarming. That’s because the investigators wanted to know whether chronic kidney disease (CKD) occurs after acute injury to the kidneys or if it can develop without any early warning signs of AKI.
The answer seems to be yes.
