Nurselisa, I'm figuring from your name that you are in the medical profession so I'm extra glad to see you say what's obvious to me...that the way I eat (regardless of carb amounts) would be perfectly healthy for someone pregnant. It just seems ridiculous to say otherwise. Shobha, that is exceptional advice. I am so glad you posted it. A LOT of women can benefit from this. I am very much in that "if I had to do it all over again, this is how I'd do it" mode, although I did manage to stay more LC than I expected when I was pregnant. Still, I think it's important to get the word out. It's still not just "accepted" that LC is a good thing while pregnant.

There are medical professionals who immediately dismiss anything but the conventional stance on nutrition, especially when talking about pregnancy. The OB is so weighed down by liability issues today, that they cannot afford to recommend anything but what is "textbook" because they are terrified that if they get sued some expert will look at every minute detail of the care they provided a patient looking for anything that deviates from the "norm" and pounce on it. So, you can't always rely on your OB to give you advice that works for YOU personally. But, I think that there was nothing good about the sugar and starch diet that I had during pregnancy. If I have another baby, I will just quietly go about eating meat, fruit, veg, and dairy fats, and whole milk and just smile politely when the doc tells me how much better I am doing than last time. I once gained 9 pounds in two days (which was all fluid in my legs and feet). I question if this would have been so severe if I hadn't been carb overloading. The baby gets their nutrition from you, one way or another, and will simply rob your body for what it needs. I think that empty calories are a bad idea given this. I have no idea what I was thinking, but I think the answer was- I WASN'T!!!

I know. Quite frankly, I think if they just avoid sugar and refined flour, they have most of the benefit already. Fruits and vegetables are still fine, IMO. As long as they eat lots of eggs, fatty dairy (if they tolerate dairy) and fatty meat (if they tolerate meat).

Yes, I go through a lot of that "I wish I had done this while pregnant" stuff too. I had no clue about low-carb then, hadn't ready GCBC or any of Taubes' articles. Also, for the entire pregnancy, I had terrible all-day random sickness. In fact I lost 1-2 kgs in the first trimester and managed to gain a little only after that. I gained only about 4-5 kgs totally. With all that sickness, I pretty much managed only by eating what I had cravings for. Thankfully, I did manage to eat some eggs and fruit.

I am trying to compensate now buy giving my son lots of omega-3, Vitamin D3, butter, eggs etc. And so far, he's been quite healthy and very lean. I know a lot of people think my son is not healthy because he's not chubby ... but we know how strong he is. He hardly falls ill, talks very well for his age and is cognitively quite advanced. He did walk only at 15 months, but I believe that's not an uncommon thing.
