Question Beef (steak) - where do you buy yours? Supermarket? Butchers?

Hi,

Well I am starting tomorrow. I popped to the local supermarket tonight to get some Atkins Induction friendly food (veggies, cheese, eggs and meat) to get me through the weekend, then I will go shopping again on Monday.

Anyway, I bought some beef, as I like to fry it in butter and eat that for my dinner (with veggies)... mainly because I love beef but also because it's got a good amount of calories/fat etc, so I manage to keep my fat intake up and not eat too few calories. I also prefer it to chicken/pork etc. Anyway, I got 2 small pieces (honestly, I could eat both bits for one meal!) and it cost me over £5. But I will have to have one piece per day and make it last the 2 days instead. Is there a cheaper option to buying beef? the butchers perhaps? If so, the only thing that 'bothers' me about buying from them is I wont have a nutritional info label on the back - I must admit, I do rely on those labels, and I do like to log my total intake (calories, fat protein and carb grams etc).

I am on a pretty low budget right now and would ideally like to spend no more than £5 a day on my low carb food (not sure if that's going to be possible? if not then that's tough luck for me lol, but it would help if I could get some 'cheaper' beef)... It's the meat that's taking me over budget.

I'm on very low budget at the moment too. I go to Sainsbury's or Tesco or wherever at the end of the day, and see what bargains they have. I buy all my steak like that. I look in the meat fridges, and on the butchers counter, to see what they have reduced. Last week they had half price scottish ribeye in Sainsbury's...my favourite cut, with all that lovely fat marbling through. I got a whole chicken in Co-op a couple of days ago for £1.27. Just gotta keep your eyes open for it! Last week they had 2 for the price of one organic broccoli in Sainsburys too. I tend to eat what i find cheap, and it's often steak! Good hunting....

Often frozen packets are much cheaper than fresh. The only problem is you can't see how marbled with fat they are or are not till they are defrosted.

I always go to my butcher if I can. 2 large pieces of ribeye cost about £6. If you batten them out, they go much further! I got 4 chicken legs today (drumstick + thigh) for £2.70.

I prefer my butcher, he offers more variety, not just steak but different types of offal which are usually much cheaper than popular cuts of steak.
Chicken is cheaper there also.

I go to my local meat wholesaler to buy my steak and other meats

Cant remember the prices right off now, but much cheaper than butchers etc and you dont have to buy huge amounts

An example of price was Stewing steak, butchers was £2.50lb, wholesale price £1.25lb
