Default ACV and acid stomach

Mods, please move this post to the appropriate place if necessary.

I very much want to invoke the "Metformin Effect" but when I drink ACV, my stomach gets tied up in knots. It hurts.

Can somebody help me. Is there a trick I can use to cushion my stomach which won't undermine the benefits of drinking ACV?

Thank you.

How much are you taking at once? In how much water?

What if you were to dilute it further....try 1/4 tsp in a cup of water.....if that's OK, try 1/2 tsp. Gradually work your way up till you find your limit.

Or maybe you could spread it out, with 1/4 or 1/2 tsp in *every* glass of water you drink.

I'm not taking it at all at this time because of previous attempts which failed.

When I had GERD, I knew of 2 natural remedies:
  • ACV
  • Apple (raw)
The one that worked for me was raw apple. ACV made it worse.

I'm also one of those people who can't use citrus without my mouth breaking out in sores.

There are apple cider vinegar capsules you can buy, sold by many different companies. Maybe you could take them with a meal to help your stomach? And at least it wouldn't hurt your mouth since they get swallowed so quickly.

So you can't tolerate any vinegar or citrus in any amount, with or without additional food? What about vinaigrettes?

Yes, vinaigrettes are ok, but my tummy prefers milky dressings.

My taste buds prefer milky dressings, some vinaigrettes can be harsh. But the fact that you can tolerate vinaigrette makes me wonder if you might need to buffer the vinegar with fat.

I also like Mrs Skip's recommendation of the capsules. Have you tried them?

I also threw out my ACV capsules. Sigh. I have a bit left in my bottle of Bragg which I use to make the salad dressing. Obviously the amount I get in that doesn't give me the MetEffect. I was trying to figure out a way to get more into my system. Maybe oil into my stomach first and then sip ACV water.

My homemade salad dressing is 2 parts oil to 1 part vinegar. So 2 Tbl of it would give you about 2 tsp of vinegar. Not a huge amount. So maybe the oil is buffering it for you?

1 Cup of oil
1/4 cup of balsamic vinegar
1/4 cup of red wine vinegar
1-2 cloves of garlic, diced or crushed
1 tsp of salt

Nancy, your recipe looks great.

I've been thinking about your desire to get The Metformin Effect, Glenda; that is, how to increase your insulin sensitivity. Of course you are NOT diabetic so may not need the full Metformin Effect (the dosage varies depending on degree of insulin resistance, right?).

So if a full blown diabetic benefits from 2 T ACV per day, maybe 2 tsp (or less?) would be enough for you. Here's another experiment for you: try adding ACV vinaigrette twice a day (you could modify Nancy's recipe, I'm sure) and see how much you can tolerate. You might have to adjust the dose up and down a bit depending on your stomach and perhaps over time you can tolerate a bit more.

How will you know if your insulin sensitivity is increased?

Since my present plan is 1 meal every 24 hours, I hope I would begin to lose some weight.

I wonder if your intolerance is to vinegar, or to apple cider vinegar specifically? As far as I know, the most relevant factor is the acetic acid, so white vinegar should do.

Really? Rice Vinegar is really my preference. I've always felt it to be milder. That would be great. I think I'll try that today, diluted in my water. Thanks.

Funny it was just the opposite for me. I had been taking ranitidine (prescription zantac) 150 mg twice daily for years, and when I started intermittent fasting , one meal a day, and added ACV, I haven't even had to take one dose! No more heartburn. That may be due to IF, or may be due to ACV. I take mine ice cold in lemon flavored seltzer water. It's delicious.
