Default Synthroid, under the tongue... question believe it or not!

So I decided to switch my synthroid back to bed time, but figure I'd do it sublingually since I also take my supplements at that time.

So... under the tongue it went. Not bad really. However, the pill got soft, mushy and felt like a cotton ball under my tongue and didn't really seem like it was going to completely dissolve. I figured it might be the filler. So after 10 minutes or so, I swished it down with water. Should I have left it there longer?

I've never taken synth, but when I do this with armour, it can take 10-15 mins to totally go away. It helps if you crunch it once to break it up and then let all the pieces just sit under your tongue.

Nancy, I usually put mine under my tongue just before I nod off, mostly b/c I need to wait half an hour after brushing my teeth (calcium).

I've never noticed that effect with the Synthroid, but I suppose we all experience it differently.

why would this method be better than just taking it? I have never heard of this.

Hi Admo:

Thyroid meds absorb better when taken sublingually since many things can interfere with absorption when taken orally.

It makes life much easier than having to worry about taking it one hour before or two hours after food, especially when you split your doses up.

Here's a good FAQ about taking thyroid meds and possible interactions. http://www.thyroid-info.com/article...id-drug-faq.htm

Nancy, if you're awake when you take it just move it around a little with your tongue - it will disolve better. I used to get that filler/cotton ball thing with my Thyroid (Armour), it tastes gross too (shhh Wanda ) - like how wet dog smells. My Synthroid tastes like candy. Yum. E.

Man, that sucker was under my tongue a good half an hour last night and not dissolving. I hope I get the "good" out of it before I swallow it.

Even breaking it up with your teeth didn't help dissolve it?

It turns into a mushy, wet mass, but it doesn't dissolve after it turns into the wet slimey thing. It just stays there. I guess it'd be like the difference between trying to dissolve flour under your tongue versus sugar.

Leave it to me to be the only person on earth that can't figure out how to take my meds under the tongue.

wierd, it sounds like Thyroid (natural desiccated thyroid) as opposed to the synthroid I have. Have you tried pushing it into your cheek, where there might be more saliva?

I'll give it a try, Nat. I figure it's probably going down the throat anyway. Hopefully I'll be switching to DT in a few weeks and this won't even be an issue.

I just suck my meds - synthroid is yummy and sweet. I've done this for a long time - does not seem to be a problem.

FWIW, I've just now learned that when taking your hormones this way you should be p utting the pill between your cheek and your gums, not under your tongue. You want it to disolve where there's the least amount of saliva, so that the bulk of the hormones are absorbed via the capilaries in your mouth. Saliva will get swallowed and end up in your gut, so whatever is trapped in the saliva will go with it. Doing it this way does take longer, FYI.

Nat
