Default Sugar for energy? Not so!

Fans of Amy Berger of Tuit Nutrition (website still being revamped as of this writing) will be pleased to see her as co-author on this study:

Quote:
Added sugars drive nutrient and energy deficit in obesity: a new paradigm

Obesity has traditionally been thought of as a state of caloric imbalance, where the intake of calories exceeds the expenditure or ‘burning’ of calories. However, a more nuanced appreciation for the complex biochemistry and physiology of cellular energy generation suggests that obesity is a state of hormonal imbalance causing increased shunting of food energy into adipose tissue for storage, resulting in decreased satiety and ultimately leading to increased caloric intake.

This was exactly my experience. The fatter I got, the hungrier I was. This explains why bystanders would mistake cause for effect. I looked like I had eaten my way into this state, which in fact my state was a reflection of my terrible hunger.

Quote:
Not only do added sugars displace nutritionally superior foods in the diet, but they may also deplete nutrients from other foods that have been consumed, as well as from body stores, in order to enable their proper oxidation and liberate their calories as energy. Additionally, the consumption of added sugars damages the mitochondria and hence impairs energy generation.

It's well written and highly readable -- do check it out!

I know a few people with anorexia. I ask them what they ate last week and they'd say, "4 carrots and 40 ice cubes". I know for a fact a few of them had little to no self control. How does someone eat almost nothing with little self control ?

One idea I had was "Food makes people hungry". Having fasted a bit I think there is elements of truth in the idea. I think the food that is most responsible for appetite is carbs.

Even "less than optimal willpower me" can lose weight cutting the carbs !
