I hear you although I'm the opposite - at the lower end of BMI range I would be around a 12 instead of a smaller size. It just doesn't mean anything for most people.

BMI is a VERY crude tool- it accounts for "taller people generally weigh more" but it doesn't take into account body type, bone structure, fat vs muscle, etc. I'm not quite sure why it ever became such a widely popularized thing- I think at first it was used in some research applications and was never intended to be a "mass market" tool for people to worry about.

I even need to get my 6yo's BMI as part of his medical paperwork for school! I mean, it's non-invasive and they weigh and measure him anyway, but IMO it's completely rediculous to worry about BMI for 2nd graders!

I agree, BMI scks!

Just for fun one time, I was playing with the numbers and wanted to see how low my weight would have to be to be on the "lower end of normal"...

I can tell you, I would be a skeleton. So yeah, it's a pretty crude tool. I agree.

Step away from the BMI tool Sheila and focus on how your clothes fit and how you feel.

Is it time to bring out the pictures of high BMI men...thus proving how stupid BMI is as a measurement of health???

According to the old Met Life weights, hubby is underweight by four pounds at 136, but according to BMI he could lose 22 pounds and still be normal weight at 114 for a healthy man.

Oh yeah. Because the first thing I think to myself when I see that picture is 'that boy serious needs to be on a diet'. snort.

BMI is a made up number used because it can give general trends over large populations. On an individual level it is ludicrous.

5'5" - it's crazy! I mean, he's still got meat on his bones at 136, but I can't imagine him losing even five pounds and looking OK.

BMI is fine for the average person. But for others, it sucks big time.

I would have to lose a leg at the hip in order to lose enough weight to be normal according to the BMI.
