Question Has anyone trained for a marathon or...

done extensive long distance running while following a lo carb way of eating? I am training for the 2003 LA Marathon & am having trouble finding energy. I just got back into the lo carb WOE after starting, blowing it on vacation & now I'm back on it. Any advice or experience with this is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Cathy

You might want to try a search on this forum regarding marathon running. I think Dan actually had a long post regarding marathon training and carbs. I did a quick search and came up with http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthre...=marathon+train for you.

hi,

I was training for my first half marathon before i started having ankle problems. I am going to start back up training this week actually. I noticed though will all the running and with soccer practice fatigue comes on strong. I actually switched from Atkins to Schwarzbein for that reason. I really need the extra carbs with so much training.

Default did the WDW marathon this year in January

Hi,
I trained for a marathon while low carbing. It was my very first one, and my goal was to finish. I ran it in 6 hours 26 min and odd seconds. I'd like to run another one a bit faster, under 5 hours. But, I ran alone and next time with a partner I think I'll do better. Now, as for my long runs, (my longest one in training was 20 miles and it took me 4 hours) I didn't eat any high carb foods, but I drank sports drinks and water about every 20 to 30 min. and afterward, I drank the same for the next hour after I finished. I got pretty tired after my long runs, but I think that because of the nature of long runs...not low carbing.
If you're really interested, you could do a google search in the rec.running group for my posts (~*~Gwendolyn~*~) and find my marathon report that I posted afterwards.

Default yep

If LC and marathoning, Gwen's approach is the one you would want to follow.

On long runs, you will need to take in carbs every 20 mins or so to fuel activity. Don't worry, they are being burned. LOL.

Hmmm ... I'm gonna follow that link that Brenda posted to see what I said before ...
