I think theres alot more to it than what/how mice in labs eat.

Observe any medium-large predatory animal. All gorge and fast. Lions and tigers eat 15-30 lbs of meat per day or more. They are universally thin, and muscular. No weighing, measuring, or counting required.

We have a lot more in common with large predatory animals than very small animals completely adapted to thrive on grains/seeds.

I personally eat 2-3 meals a day, as this fits my own schedule. Occasionally I eat 1 meal. Lots of fat, moderate-low protein, low-very low carbs.

There may be great benefit to eating small portions thru the day if one is constantly eating copious carbs, as the slightly more stabilized blood sugar levels are going to help (kinda). But there is absolutely no reason to pick a specific number of meals to eat on a day to day basis as long as one gets the required nutrition.

I'm old fashioned, 3 meals a day. Breakfast between 8 and 9 am, lunch around 1, dinner at 6. I'm never hungry between breakfast and lunch. If I'm hungry between lunch and dinner, I will have 1 oz of almonds. No food after dinner.

Some days I am hungry and eat frequently. Other days I can go without food for hours and hours. I eat to satiety. It's a skill I have not get fully honed, but it's improving over time. Currently, 5 "meals" or so works best for me.

What you are doing seems to be working for you. I wouldn't change anything until it stops working.

To answer your question: I firmly believe that there is something to be said for intermittent fasting, for three satiating meals a day, and for six small meals a day. Which one will work for you depends on your physiology and where you are in life. I've tried all three.

Intermittent fasting (and even long, long fasts) worked beautifully for me when I was in my 20s and 30s, athletic, with a kick-ass metabolism.

On a nutritionist's orders, 6 small meals a day turned my health around when I hit menopause, acquired adrenal fatigue, and developed the sluggish metabolism of an older woman. On five or six small meals I got my energy and metabolism back and felt great again.

Now I'm a lc, primal eater. 3 meals a day with absolutely no snacking allows me to maintain a 35lb weight loss and sometimes to lose a little more. When I snack, any additional lost lbs come right back on again. This may have something to do with leptin resistance. There is a thread about leptin here somewhere.

Sorry for the long post, but the bottom line is that you have to experiment to find what works for you and the same technique may not work for you forever and may not work for someone else at all.

It depends for me. Most of the time I eat 3 meals a day.

Sometimes twice a day, with or without snacking.

Often you should eat three to four meals a day, and one of them must be a few calories.

I do eat three full meals a day and have moderate snacks in between. No midnight snacks. Although my doctor has been telling me to eat 6 light meals spread throughout the day, I'm still finding it hard to follow it. But I think I'll try. He says, it will keep my metabolism running throughout the day.

I do better on 2 meals a day, but i used to eat 3 meals before. I think my body got used to IF and now I feel way stuffed if I eat 3 meals a day.

I am glad the topic of metabolism was brought up since I am trying to get mine moving.
I workout 6-7 days a week, and want to lose ten lbs. or at least 5 !! !

Any thoughts???

Read Ron Rosedale. He will definitely change your mind about "fast" metabolism. .

Basically a fast metabolism means we live fast, multiply, and die so that our DNA can survive. Keep metabolism low and you live long so your dna has a chance to replicate itself.

I eat 2-3 times per day. No mini meals. Not much snacking. I started following the Warrior Diet which advocates Intermittant Fasting to help stabilize insulin. Helps with insulin resistance.
I have found that after going low carb, I really just don't feel like eating all the time. I skip breakfast (which seems way over rated anyhow), and have an early lunch. Around 11:00 am. I'll have a bit of something (Greek yogurt with nuts for example) around mi-afternoon, then I have a huge dinner. Some type of protein and usually a big salad. Sometimes I make a cheesy, vegetable casserole. I always have some kind of dessert. Dark chocolate. Or something I've made without sugar.
