You can get your heart racing lifting weights. Even upper body weights. How about 100 fast sit-ups? Talk to a trainer or PT they will have ideas. Btw....OWWWW! I bet it hurt! How on earth did you get out of hiking area?

I walked back luckily it was only a half mile left to the car. As soon as it happened I knew something was wrong , heard a pop. It wasn't an hour or so later and I fell and got nauseous.

I thought about the eliptical and bike, but I think he will be in a cast of some sort for awhile and it might be difficult to do. When I had my knees replaced, I really relied on fast upper body weight reps and sit ups. Not quite as good, but better than nothing.

The upper body is 80% of the mass of the lower body. So aerobic exercise with the upper is almost as good.

If you sat on a balance ball and did high rep weights over your head, watch that heart soar.

Or check out the T-Tapp move, "hoe downs." It gets the heart rate way up there because you are engaging just about every muscle in the body. You could do it with your sitz bones supported on a bar stool even. that's what I would do. Only thing is, it is such high intensity that you would need to do it in intervals.
