Question So, Splenda is not cheating, but sugar alcohols are?

I'm sorry...I just want to be sure I understand this right...I've read the Atkins book several times and I've been looking up info on sugar alcohols. Is it true that consuming sugar alcohols would be considered cheating, but consuming Splenda/sucralose (or other AS's) would not be considered cheating? This seems to be what I am getting from reading posts on this website, but I wanted to be sure I've got it right. Or is this just true for induction? Or is it just a YMMV? If this is true that would mean I can't eat the Russel Stovers chocolates (because they have sugar alcohols as well as sucralose) but I could eat, say, sf jello w/splenda-sweetened whipped cream? Is that right? I'm trying to determine what forms of sweet things are acceptable and if necessary replace the RS choco's with something that is acceptable. Thank you.

You said it best when you said "YMMV"....because their is nothing more true. I can eat a bag of Russel Stovers PB cups every single day and probably still lose weight. The sugar alcohols DO NOT stall me one bit. However, they do give me explosive gas and cramps! So for that reason I choose not to consume them.

Some people I have read about would be just as well off eating regular peanut butter cups, because the sugar alcohols ahve the same exact effect as real sugar on them. So my advice is to experiment with your body. If you can consume them and still lose weight, then more power to you!

I agree, it is what works for you. If you are going strictly by Atkins book, after induction you can have things with sugar alcohol and splenda - just count your carbs. Atkins even makes his own peanut butter cups and stuff with sugar alcohol that he says is ok if you are not sensitive to them. The book and as you have seen on some of the posts here it says sugar alcohol CAN cause stalls in some people. After induction, if you want give it a try. Good luck and way to go on your weight lose.

Yea, I would wait until after induction. I bought some of the chocolate type products with the sugar alcohols but are afraid to try them because of all the bad rap I hear people say about them causing stalls. I just got off a stall from adding a few nuts to my 20 carbs a day and had to give them up.

The sugar alcohols do not make me stall and I'm on Induction and will be for quite some time. I think it depends on the individual.

One more thing to remember........

IMO sugar alcohols get a bad rap because some people on here get inpatient and consider 1 to 3 weeks without losing a "stall". So they start blaming things instead of considering the fact there body could be taking a pause in weight loss. Weight loss isn't steady for many people. I usually go a few weeks losing several lbs a week, then pause for a few weeks. Some people lose consistently 1 to 2 lbs a week, every week. Everyone is different

Dr A makes all those products with sugar alcohols because the firm belief that they have no effect in and of themselves on weight loss. They may cause you to binge, or may increase the number of calories to such a level so that losing is slower, but the last post is right-most people think this is a fast loss plan and get wrapped up in that, it is not fast for most folks especially women and those with less than 100 pounds to lose!

Wow...I appreciate all the responses....I guess I was getting scared that the sugar alcohols would cause me problems. After reading over the posts and trying on another dress that I used to not be able to get into, but now look fabulous in, I think I'm going to keep my Russell Stovers for now. I love them, they don't really cause me to crave I don't think...at least I've not eaten anything else sweet....and I think it helps me enjoy the diet more. And apparently, though I have not lost any weight in about 3 weeks, I have definately lost inches. As long as that keeps up I guess I haven't stalled. Thank you again all.

mrsschmelz and fairchild...I have a personal question....I see your progress and see that you are on OWL. How long have you been on OWL and how many carbs do you eat per day? I know it's different for everyone, but I'm just wondering. Thank you.

I have been in OWL for probably about 6 months now, but have only started eating more than 20 carbs a day in the past 2 months.(Remember the day you add nuts, any fruits and etc you are no longer doing induction even if you are staying under 20 carbs a day)

I now eat anywhere from 30 to 60 carbs a day, and on days when I want to splurge I will eat up to 100 or 120! The key to being able to consume more carbs with me and still lose weight is STRENGTH TRAINING. Ever since I started lifting weights more seriously, I could add carbs and continue to lose weight and feel great.

So if you are looking for any advice....I would say more important than watching closely your carb intake, is to exercise and do it faithfully.

Some people stall from any type of sweetner, I am one. Others, like me sister, can have diet sodas through the day and still drop pounds per week.

best wishes

The main reason they are a no-no during induction is in order to break cravings. Induction period is to change eating habits, break cravings, and change the way we consider food. Eating alot of SF chocolates and diet sodas defete that purpose and can keep the cravings alive. After induction it's one of those experiment for yourself type deals.

Also be aware just because one sugar alcohol effects you, others may not. My son can handle lactol, but give him a little of the milatol (sp?) and there is a huge mess to clean up. For me most things made with sugar alcohols are just too overly sweet and upset my stomach. I've found some Hershey SF dark chocolate that tastes great though in small doses.

Sadly, I am using CVS Nicotine Lozenges at this time. There is no info on box re: ingredients. I don't know if I can use these on Atkins.
Does anyone know?

Frecks--you're in maintenance now. It is up to YOU what is considered cheating or not cheating depending on how it affects YOU. If it causes you cravings or impacts you negatively in some way, there's your answer regardless of what "author" considers it leagal or not. At the point where you are in your journey, it's if YOU consider it legal.

Didn't you say not too long ago that your cravings and hunger were back and part of it was too many legal treats? I think back then was your answer in that you found your threshold. You pushed the envelope and the envelope pushed back. Just keep that in mind.

I didn't even look at the date when it was posted, just the most recent post. My bad. I'm going over to Frecks journal and apologize
