Thanks for your input. It appears, as always, that there is no such thing as an easy fix.

Thank you.

I had a "thyroid storm" - and all the other symptoms of Graves except heart failure. I was hospitalized twice for severe depression, which was a direct result of the Graves. I was so sick I was begging the doctors to take the tyroid out - and had to wait so they could get me stabilized enough to have the surgery. I can assure you, hyperthyroid is no answer to weight loss.

Rebecca,
Let me know how it goes! I had bloodwork this past Monday and my appointment is tomorrow morning. I'm really anxious to see my results and to see how my weight registers on the doc's scales. I count 16.5 lbs since I started on 7/7/03!! I haven't lost a pound in a few years so this is very exciting for me.

Will happily post my experience tomorrow

Well, very good news indeed, today. My thyroid levels are normal as were my blood pressure and pulse!

According the doc's scale, I'm down 19 lbs!

It's a very good day in the neighborhood!

Bluiize, what all are you using? I have only added Copper to my regular regime of supplements. I have not been doing LC for a couple of weeks, as I actually gained 8 lbs on Atkins. I am going to get back to LCing tho because I felt so much better. I have found that back on carbs, I am bloated and feeling uncomfortable.

Beachgrl,

I'm taking 600 mgs calcium/300 magnesium and about 300-400 potassium per day plus a multi-vitamin (without zinc and iron). I was going to add copper back in however, my levels are fine without it. I am on 10 mg of Tapezole daily however, I've been on tapezole for almost 4 years with no consistent results. I started LCing on 7/7/03 when my T4 went back up to 3.00 and my TSH became supressed again (on 10 mg of tapezole per day). In just that short amount of time on low-carb, my levels are in perfect range.

If you log your food into fitday, you'll notice that zinc and iron are under the % RDA. According to John's theory on ithyroid, we need to watch zinc and iron intake so I'm guessing this is helping my thyroid levels as well. I also started drinking tap water instead of bottled water to help with copper intake (especially helpful if you have copper pipes).

So, between the supplements, the WOE, and drinking tap water, I am feeling the best that I have in years. I'm down 19 lbs. and am exercising regularly (something I have been unable to do in the last 4 years).

I hope this helps.

Bluiize,
The tapwater thing blows my mind! I have been drinking bottled water for 20 years! That will be an adjustment, but I am willing to try it. I need speak to my Endo about Tapezole. I'll keep you posted.

Thank you so much for your help!

Rebecca,
Just checking in to see how things are going. Have you had bloodwork done yet?

Hi Bluiize,
I am actually getting my blood results today. I saw the endo last week and told him about my supplementing, he didn't seem to have a problem with it, and the fact that I feel really terrific was encouraging to him. I had not gotten my blood drawn before my appt as I usually do, so he sent me down to get it done after the appt. It must not be bad, or he would have called me. I am anxious to see it!
Thanks for thinking of me. I'll post my results when I get them.
Take Care,
Rebecca

Hi Bluiize,
Well here it is.....could you help me interpret it?

June 13 results as follows; 0.023 TSH
1.47ng/dl FT4 (don't know what this is)

New results as of today 09/09/03
TSH 0.020
T4 10.5

I don't have a very good understanding of these lab numbers, could you shed some "laymen" language light on it for me?
Thanks,
Rebecca

Rebecca,

I don't understand why docs don't do the same tests every time. It's hard to measure (and for you to understand) when you aren't given the same results each time. Your TSH seems low however, from what I understand, it can take your TSH at least 6 weeks to adjust based on what's happening with T3 and T4 levels. In June you were given a Free T4 result (and that looked good, btw) and in September you were given a T4 result. I say keep up the supplements. Did your endo put you on any ATDs (Tapezole, PTU)?

You haven't been on the supplements that long so I would recommend you have at least your TSH checked again in 4 to 6 weeks.

Just for a frame of reference, my last test results were (August 22):

TSH 0.34 (it's on the low end of the range)
T3 ng/dL 119
Free T4 ng/dL 1.36

My June 25th results were:

TSH undetectable
Free T4 ng/dL 3.00

I started LC'ing on 7/7/03 and I'm on 10 mg of Tapezole.

I hope this helps, and keep me posted!

Dianna

Rebecca,
I found this statement on about.com:

"If your doctor ran a test called Total T4 or Total Thyroxine, normal range is approximately 4.5 to 12.5. If you had a high reading and a low TSH, your doctor might consider that indicative of hyperthyroidism."

Your total T4 is in range, but your TSH is low. I still say to give the supplements more time and have your bloodwork done again in 4 to 6 weeks. When do you visit your endo again?
