Very scary stuff. I'm taking simvastatin as a result of a massive heart attack and triple bypass. Haven't had any muscle pain but am very concerned.

If you feel you must take a statin, take CoQ10, too. Part of the problems with statins is they block your body's pathway for making your own CoQ10. I've heard recommendations from 300 to 600 milligrams per day for people taking statins. You'll want to take it with food containing fat. I've also read that it's absorbed better in smaller doses, so splitting that amount up with each meal might be the best.

Here's more bad news on taking statins.

Quote:
"Statin use was associated with decreased risks of oesophageal cancer but increased risks of moderate or serious liver dysfunction, acute renal failure, moderate or serious myopathy, and cataract. Adverse effects were similar across statin types for each outcome except liver dysfunction where risks were highest for fluvastatin. "

I"ndividual statins were not significantly associated with risk of Parkinson’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, venous thromboembolism, dementia, osteoporotic fracture, gastric cancer, colon cancer, lung cancer, melanoma, renal cancer, breast cancer, or prostate cancer. Statin use was associated with decreased risks of oesophageal cancer but increased risks of moderate or serious liver dysfunction, acute renal failure, moderate or serious myopathy, and cataract."
This is the from the study, which was an open cohort study, not a randomized trial. The risk of myopathy and liver dysfunction is not new, it is why labs are monitored. Briefly looking at the numbers needed to treat (NNT) and numbers needed to harm (NNH), it looks like the risk to benefit is pretty clearly on the side of taking statins..

6) Atorvastatin (Lipitor) worsens insulin resistance and hyperglycemia. "Atorvastatin treatment resulted in significant increases in fasting insulin and glycated hemoglobin levels consistent with insulin resistance and increased ambient glycemia in hypercholesterolemic patients." (click)

Simvastatin (Zocor) improves blood flow but REDUCES adiponectin level. (click)

Adiponectin is a good hormone to have around.

The latest theory of Lou Gerhig disease is that it's caused by repetitive brain injury, which would explain why so many pro football players get it.

It may well be that there are multiple causes of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
