Re daily fluctuations...two things I'd like to share.

1) Sometimes the scales lag behind a day or two in showing the results of a carb binge or the results of some positive change in dietary habits. Just because one has a huge baked potato for dinner with no uptick on the scales the next morning doesn't necessarily mean that it is okay for that person to eat baked potatoes. The weight gain might not show up until the 2nd day when you've completely forgotten about that baked potato.

2) Sometimes minor fluctuations are totally inexplicable. They may be related to when one last has a B.M. and just how "hearty" that B.M. was. They may be related to water retention at one's TOM, or to the fact that one used a tiny bit more salt one day than usual. Or, given that one huge way our bodies use up energy is just to keep us at the right temperature, such fluctuations could be due to spending the day or night in a slightly warmer or cooler room. Who KNOWS? There are just way too many things that can have minor effects on our weight to be thrown by those daily TINY fluctuations of the scales. The important thing is the trends. Are they up or are they down. And the best way I know to figure that out is to use a spreadsheet to graph one's daily weights and then look at the big picture.

Also, I've come to believe that having an old fashioned spring and dial scale that doesn't read to tenths of a pound is actually helpful because on my scales 185.7 looks exactly like 186.4. Both get recorded as 186. I read to the nearest pound...as far as my old eyes can tell and therefore have no reason to stress out or celebrate tenths of pounds gained or lost.

I also refuse to celebrate a new low or think of it as "real" until I've been at that weight or lower for at least three days in a row. Conversely a 1 or 2 pound uptick from the weight I currently think of as my "real" weight is also NOT a cause for alarm to me unless that 1 or 2 extra pounds sticks around for three or more days . Now three pounds gained or lost in one day would be remarkable. But, even back when I was brand new to this WOE and a whole lot heavier than I am now, I don't think I ever saw a three pound change from one day to the next.
