Default Chocolate dipped Strawberries???

Anybody tried these from the recipe in the book. They don't have any sweetener in them so I'm wondering if they are really bitter. These would be great for Valentines Day!!

I haven't tried them, but if the strawberries are sweet enough, the chocolate shouldn't be too bitter. The problem is that this time of year a lot of strawberries are watery and not very sweet, and I don't eat them in the winter, but it might be easier to get good strawberries in the US from somewhere where they are in season now. The greenhouse ones just don't taste right, IMO.

Very romantic and sexy idea, btw!

We've had decent strawberries around here for the last 3 weeks or so.

Tommorrow, Feb 14, is our 23rd wedding anniversary and we plan on having the chocolate dipped strawberries as a treat...I'll report back.

I don't have the book here but I recall them being made with bittersweet or semisweet choc, which does have a good bit of sugar, though not as much as typical milk chocolate. Chocolate with no sweetner is awful.

From the SB website newsletter:

Valentine's Day on the Beach

What would Valentine's Day be without a tantalizing taste of chocolate? This sexy sweet is not entirely off-limits for South Beach dieters in Phase 2 and 3—just make sure you follow these guidelines:

The darker the better. Not only does dark chocolate have less sugar than milk chocolate, it's also rich in flavonoids, compounds that function as antioxidants and can help boost heart health.

Less is more. A small amount of dark chocolate can be just as satisfying as splurging on a whole box. To help limit your intake, try melting a small amount of dark chocolate and then dip a few strawberries or orange slices in the melted goodness.

Don't despair if you overdo it. If you indulge in a few too many bonbons or truffles, you can always make up for it by going back on Phase 1 until you've shed the added pounds. An occasional slipup is OK as long as you don't make a habit of it and allow yourself to fall into a pattern of yo-yo dieting.

You haven't tried these yet!!! Oh, my, they are wonderful! The almond extract helps sweeten the chocolate. My kids love them too!

For some reason I thought the book said unsweetened chocolate, I'll have to check it out again. So is it just DARK chocolate? Could I just use unsweetened chocolate with Splenda and almond extract???

Thanks guys!

Tiffany, what kind of whipped cream do you use?

I have been using semi-sweet cooking chocolate. I think that is what the book said to use. I will have to check...

My DH & I get the spray kind! LOL not what you are thinking! We get it because it is just so darned convienent... I think it's called Ready-Whip but I'm not 100% on that... but it is 2 carbs per 2 tablespoons so you can't go overboard... and IMO the "extra creamy" isn't nearly as good... has a weird aftertaste.

Made these last night for a movie snack...used bittersweet chocolate w/almond extract...while I don't think I should have them very often...they are really good!

Sorry, I just saw the question.

I didn't make them. Instead we had Atkins icecream with whipped cream and nuts. Not to great for SB but it was low carb and it was a special occasion. I only bought the pint size so that there were no left overs.
