Question What's the weight of a packet of splenda?

Sorry for the dumb questions, but..... what is the weight of a packet (package?) of splenda? Quite a few recipies that I've found measure splenda by the packet/package rather than by the cup? And I've found that too much splenda just ruins food!
Thanks, Rachel.

Hi Rachel,

The little packets of Splenda are slightly more concentrated than the loose Splenda in the box. Each little packet of Sweetener (not just Splenda ) is equivalent in sweetness to 2 teaspoons of sugar. So 1 little packet is equivalent to 2 teaspoons of the loose Splenda.
Forget about the weight, because Splenda is a lot lighter than sugar.

Each little packet has 1 carb (very slightly under), and so does 2 teaspoons of the loose Splenda.

If a recipe does call for, say, half a cup of Splenda, you would need 12 little packets.

HTH. Ask again if it's not clear.

Rosebud

PS: Questions are only dumb if you don't ask them!

Thanks Rosebud, can I ask a couple of other questions, where can I buy unsweetened chocolate? Even the health shops round here don't have it. Also, do you know what vegetable bouillon powder is (I may have mis-spelt that). These weird ingredients that just do exist in NZ!
Thanks, Rachel

Hi Rachel,

I didn't notice you were an Enzeder.
Can you get Splenda tablets there? We have them here, and they are a lot lighter in carbs than the loose stuff. In case you do, here is a great post from Ozgal explaining the carbs in 'em.
I actually just ignore the few carbs in the tablets.

About the chocolate: I'm afraid I have bad news for you. Unsweetened chocolate doesn't seem to be available in Oz or NZ. There is a way to use cocoa in recipes calling for unsweetened choc. For every ounce (about 30g) of unsweetened chocolate, use 3 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa and 1 tablespoon of fat. Now that would be American 15 mL tablespoons.

Bouillion is just a fancy word for stock - so just look for vegetable stock cubes, or premade stock.

Have you checked out our Oz/NZ forum yet? You'll find lots of local help there.

Roz

Hi Roz,

I wondered if that vegie bouillon stuff was just a fancy way of saying stock powder (and I already have some at home!). Not sure about the splenda tablets - shall have to have a good hunt around at the supermarket & health food place I've found. And thanks for the good tip on unsweetened chocolate. No I haven't seen the OZ/NZ forum, must have a look for that. Thanks for all your helpful tips!

Cheers, Rachel
