Default Basal Temperature

Hi guys

My doctor ordered thyroid tests for me a while ago, and also asked me to take my temperature when I get up in the morning for about a week. I have my next appointment with her next week, and will be taking my temperature when I get up every day until then.

This morning my temperature was 36.6 C, which my doctor said is the low end of normal.

My question is, how quickly does your body temperature rise after you wake up? I ask because I don't sleep well, and am often awake for some time before I get up. This morning for example, I was awake and tossing and turning for at least half an hour before I got up, possibly longer.

Will this affect the results of my temperature testing?

I'd keep the thermometer close by the bed, and take your temperature as soon as you wake.

But...36.6 is completely and utterly normal - whether first thing in the morning, or during the day. In fact, most peoples' early morning temps are lower than that. We are told 37º C is "normal," but in fact "normal" means between about 36 and 37. Anything over 37 becomes a fever.

My temperature hits its highest point usually early afternoon. But getting some physical activity going makes it go up sooner. On my new thyroid dose I am actually hitting 98.6 degrees sometimes!

So if anything over 37 is a fever, having a temperature of 37.6 just before bed is bad?

A bit bad. A temp of 37.6º would indicate a low grade fever.

Weird!

So if I have a slight fever for some reason, the early morning temperature reading could be mistaken as "normal" when in fact without the fever it may not be?

Just want to check if its relevant and if I should mention my late night temperature to my doc when I go, or not!
