Default How to make AND EAT a Philly Cheesesteak

I saw a post where someone shared her recipie for a cheesesteak which she called steak and cheese and I couldnt stand to think that some people might not be enjoying these the right way so here's my recipe. I'm from Philadelphia so I can tell you how to properly make and eat a low carb cheesesteak.

For one cheesesteak

3/4 to 1.5 lbs of chipped steak (steak ums will do but arent too good, try the other brands or just get some thinly sliced steak and chop it up.

Salt (to your taste)
Pepper (to your taste)
Garlic powder (to your taste) can also use adobo if you want but dont tell, they dont even know what that is in philly.
1-2 slices of American or Provolone cheese
Green Peppers, Onions, Mushrooms (optional)

You can break up the frozen steak first into thin strips and then start cooking it and keep shredding it up as you are. To be honest I cant seem to shred it up right. I'm almost positive it is only done with a metal spatula.

If you want onions or peppers or mushrooms fry them on the side, not mixed with the meat. Also season them only with salt, pepper, a little garlic powder/salt.

Make sure to turn the steak over and flip it so it cooks evenly. As soon as theres no more pink left place the cheese on top of the meat to let it melt. DONT TOUCH IT! You can use American, provolone or if you want to splurge-cheese whiz which is the really the best.

After the cheese has melted put it on a plate, add the vegtables if you fried some, season with some salt, pepper and thats it.

Of course you can put whatever you like on it but theres one sacred rule you broke-never put mayo on a cheesesteak!! Thats like asking the pope if he's married.

I highly recommend the chicken steaks if they are available in your area-less greasy, healtheir and taste just as good if not better. Ask them to order them at your market. Let me know if you try this,

oh my god, haaaaaaaahaaaaaa
i could not stop laughing when i read this!!!!
although i'm a little late here, kevin, chicken steak is what us philadelphians call a cheesesteak made with chicken instead of beef. you cant get it from your butcher, its a whole sandwich!!!!! leave it to us philadelphians to call something with absolutely no steak in it, a chickensteak.

that was too cute!

I have made cheesteaks for a long time...never tried them with chicken though....it sounds really good. I have also made the same sandwich with thinly sliced pork....

I'd bet one with chicken, steak and pork would also be very good....

Since low carbing I eat the stuff plain or wrapped in a LC tortilla...still not a true cheesesteak, but it does nicely.

I agree! I personally don't like onions and peppers though. I like just the meat and cheese.

I was just in Philly 2 weeks ago, and watched them make my cheeseteak at Geno's and yep, it was made exactly like you said!
Now if they would just come out with a low carb Amerosa (sp?)
roll...
I did splurge on vacation and had a couple at various places. I
would have like to have tried Pat's (the rival accross the street for those not familiar), but we didn't get to. I prefer Big John's in South Jersey myself! Mmmmmmmm! DH is from Buck's County, so he was in heaven with his cheesesteaks (with whiz of course) and those yummy pretzels. Funny thing, we went to a Phillies game in the new park and they were selling Super Pretzels!!!! Like, the frozen kind that you can get anywhere! What the heck was that??? The pretzel capital of the world and they sell Super Pretzel?? Very dissappointing! But the game was great, the field is beautiful, and we won! Sorry to threadjack!

I think I am going to make some big revo rolls now so I can make myself a good philly cheese steak and feel like I am eating bread with it, lol.

Costco has some pretty good philly cheese steak meat usually. I forget the brand but it's not Steak Ums. It's real meat sliced thing, not processed. I am going to have to go pick some up now .

Cheesesteak is also lovely over a nice big salad! Not enough to impersonate a sandwich, mind you, but it makes for a really fantastic salad.
