Default Helping a Friend...

We have a friend with PCOS whose NOT diagnosed with diabetes. She's been on Metformin 1000mg a day for almost 2 years, taking one dose each morning. She's been trying to get pregnant for about that long also. She's about 35 pounds overweight, is 25 years old and has some facial hair, very little acne, also suffers from migraine headaches, but not sure if that is related in any way.

Her health status hasn't changed in the last two years, meaning all physical conditions are about the same...

She's not been on a low carb diet, but doesn't sound like she was eating extremely high carb. She doesn't smoke or drink and seems genuinely a happy person.

She does have an improper curvature in her spine, but it is not scoliosis and her neck seems a little rigid, lacking in proper curvature.

Any thoughts, suggestions, comments on what we could say or do to help her????

Eating low carb may really help. It doesnt have to be as drastic as Atkins, but what about South Beach?

My cousin had the same problem, she was slightly over weight, on Metformin, (but she was also diabetic) couldnt concieve but didnt want to go to a furtility clinic. About 4 months after starting south beach and losing about 20lbs she got pregnant with a little girl!

I am much heavier than your friend but eating LC almost erases all my symptoms of PCOS.

Another advantage of LCing, and I just learned this on Monday, As you lose weight your body releases hormones and actualy makes you more furtile. I guess hormones can get trapped or stored in fat and as you lose the fat the hormones are released making it easier to get pregnant.

I have 2 other cousins with PCOS (runs in the family!) that are not going the LC route, instead they are trying furtility drugs. Both have PCOS, only one is diabetic. The one that is not diabetic has been doing furtility treatments for 7 months with no luck, the other just started a month ago.

Another thing, women with PCOS are more likely to misscarry, (I have twice) because of the insulin/sugar issues. And I believe that the chances of this are greatly reduced by regulating sugar/insilin levels with diet.

I am no expert, by far. I just wanted to share my experiences with you. Everyone is different. I wish you friend the best of luck!
