Default #7 tip from atkins website

I just noticed something, atkins success tips, from the atkins wed site includes #7Take a daily multivitamin with minerals, including potassium, magnesium and calcium, but without iron. Take your Omega 3’s and 6’s every day and a fiber supplement if necessary.

Now I agree with the multi's, potassium, magnesiun and calcium. The omega 3's are a must take, also. BUT, omega 6's, what the average american consumes way to much omega 6's and I would think on a LC WOE the omega 6's would also be too high, so why supplement with omega 6's? Am I missing something?

Maybe that section of the book had not been updated since before Dr. Atkin's died? I'm just learning about Omega 6's now myself.

Hey - I "double-dog-dare" you to log in and ask that question over there! LOL! If someone did, I am sure it would cause quite an uproar in their little "Hoo-ville" over there. Truthfully, I'd really like to know also.

GSO - Nancylc.......

At least people over here cite more sources and are more balanced in their knowledge of low carbing.

you must be careful supplementing with potassium. Only do so with the knowledge and cooperation of your doctor.

Potassium can be dangerous if taken in mega-doses, but the amount in a multivite should be OK for most healthy people.

Actually, as long as your kidney function is normal, any extra potassium (other than massive doses ) is simply excreted by the kidneys.

Potassium is one of the minerals we do run low on, especially when we first start low carbing. My suggestion is to simply sprinkle at least one of your meals a day with a potassium salt replacement such as No Salt.

The only folk who should discuss potassium supplementation with their doctor or pharmacist, are people who are taking diuretics or BP medication.

I'm no longer convinced we even need a multivitamin. If you are eating the allowed vegies, you should be getting all your vitamins. JMO.

As for the Omega 6 nonsense.....words fail me. If you're missing something, josereds, so am I.

If that was from the 72 book I would understand, but it was from their current web site, cira 2009. If an idiot like me can catch it, could not a smart person question it, too? omega 6's are in almost everything and most americans have a very high raito of omega 6's vs omega 3's, one positive thing that supplemation with omega 3's is it helps bring the raito back to a healthy range.

Well time to crawl out from under the rock, hehehehe, fish oil supplements are mainly omega 3's, omega 6 come from veggie oil like corn oil, the body works best when it has a balance of omega 3 vs 6's. Like a 1 (omega 3) to 3 (omega 6) raito. The same is true of sodium (salt) vs patossium, and most americans get way to much salt in our diets. Our body needs some salt and some omega 6's we just usually, get way too much. OK schools over its lunch time , hehehehee

I also wonder why they don't specify that women may need the multivitamins with iron. My iron is always low and I have to supplement.

Maybe the concerns is that, if you're following Atkins to the letter, you're not getting any/many omega 6s anymore? How many LCers are eating a lot of corn or soybean oil? Are we eating enough avocados and nuts to balance out the fish oils?

My understanding is that the omegas need to be in balance, and having too many omega 3s has similar health consequences to having too many omega 6s. It's just that "omega 3 overdose" is much less common.

I just noticed at Sam's club that I could either buy Fish oil capsules OR a Super Oil Mixture "...with Omega 3, 6 and 9". So I read the labels. The Fish oil label went on about the importance of Omega 3. The Super Oil label also ONLY described the importance of Omega 3, then said, "...and we also include Omega 6 and 9!" with no explanation as to why. I asked my boyfriend what he thought & he said (jokingly) "Obviously 6 and 9 are important multiples of the number 3, and therefore healthy."

LOL Bookgoddess - it really is too bad you can't ask a question over there without being attacked or hit over the head with their "you must obey to the letter of the law" Atkin's bible! Maybe you could address the question directly to Colette?
