Default 10 Best Reasons a Low-Carb Diet is Wrong

After reading the below article, I think I need to get my will up to date! I really had hoped to avoid cancer and heart disease by following low carb.

Low carb death?

Keto-breath can be described as a cross between nail polish and over-ripe pineapple. This is common for dieters who consume so few CHO that they put their bodies in ketosis. Your best bet for permanent weight loss and control, as well as good health, is twofold:
1) increase the amount of fruits, vegetables, nonfat dairy products, whole grains and beans that you eat.

Considering that he's a Pritikin poster boy, I can't say I'm surprised at his position. Too bad that it's not based on sound science.

Many of his points (kidney disease, gout, risk of cancer, osteoporosis) have been debunked multiple times here.

*giggle* i was going to ask which is worse, the stink coming from the top end or the bottom end? or better yet, which societal stigma is worse: bad breath or being fat?

Fruits and vegetables are not included in sufficient quantities in the Low-Carb diet. This is a very serious omission. There are many phytochemicals found in a healthy diet which includes a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. The phytochemicals play an important role in cancer prevention.

where's that list of myjourney's with the 167 cups of endive you can have daily and stay within the 20g carb limit?

It is amazing how urban legends can be presented as fact.

The really distressing thing is that the article was presented by what I'm sure is a well respected hospital for the benefit of their patients. It's information like this that discourages people from doing the very thing that might keep them healthy and out of the hospital in the first place!

Nobody gets that ketosis is a temporary effect. Eventually the body develops the enzymes needed to completely metabolize ketone bodies. People get frantic when they no longer get the purple color on their urostix, not realizing they've transitioned into complete fat metabolism, not the partial metabolism that forms ketones.

I had no idea and I've been low carb for years. I wondered why all those low carb weirdnesses went away, like the funny taste in my mouth.

Interesting! I've been low carbing for nearly 4 years and have maintained for nearly 3. I check every now and again with a ketostick and it very rarely appears particularly pink these days. Its not something I've worried about at all, but I have wondered why, seeing I'm still eating the same as I always have

This same hospital has another little nugget on their site that's worth looking at. I really don't understand why their so anti low carb?

My favorite quote:

One recent study showed that a high protein meal leads to a greater tendency towards binging of foods, high in sugar and fat, later in the day.

Hmmm, now I know why I put on so much weight before low-carbing. All of those darn high protein meals leading me astray....

that page looks like the same drivel that was first released 20 years ago. what they oh-so-conveniently fail to mention is that high fat IN CONJUNCTION WITH high carb diets will cause problems. it's a pure case of selective presentation.

Oh I just HAVE to put my 2 cents in here....

The point on exercise and low carb is total bunk!! I've been training super intensely 2-3 hours in the gym cardio AND weights and have not noticed any fatigue. Quite the opposite actually...

crazy thing though, I'm actually doing M/E which severly reduces carbs to achieve weight loss. And I still don't have problems working out...

It's amazing to me the amount of babble people put down as fact without one shred of evidence...

I have to add that although I hate exercise and dont go to the gym, I've recently been to a few parties and can "out-dance" anyone. Even I'm amazed at my stamina and ability to dance (I'm not good, but I can keep going!!) all night long with no sign of tiredness, unlike my teenage daughters who were completely exhausted after 20 minutes!

I'm a smoker, but I dont drink alcohol so its not that!

Article quote: Many people are interested in loosing weight and keeping it off. Popular Diets often boast these claims but in fact do the opposite. The information below is from Dr James Kenney, PhD, RD, FACN, Nutrition Research Specialist who is board certified in Human Nutrition.

_________

How reliable can this idiot be when he can't even use the correct language?????? The correct word would be "LOSING". Loose means the opposite of tight; not firmly fastened;slack or imprecise. Lose is to misplace; waste; or suffer the loss of.

After that brilliant assault on the English language, he went from merely wrong to completely ignorant......
