Angry "20/20s" Schizophrenic Diet Piece

Everyone:

As some of you may know, the popular American TV newsmagazine "20/20" ran its lead story on Gary's "Big Fat Lie" article in the NY Times. While it was nice finally to see what Gary looks like, the report was disappointing.

Despite the report stating that fat was now good, once again, the "saturated animal fats" were branded as "The Bad Fats" along with the TFAs. The "Good Fats" were all of the politically-correct ones: olive oil, sesame oil, flax oil, and (OMG!) canola oil.

The report also kept stating that it was REFINED carbohydrates that were harmful and that whole grains were OK. As we all know, with the exception of a few vitamins and minerals, a carb is a carb is a carb. I don't think Gary meant to imply in his article that it was not OK to eat a bowl of pasta, but perfectly alright to eat a big bowl of brown rice. They even showed Gary at the end of the piece saying, "I'm going to continue eating a low-carb diet."

For the grand finale, after the peice was over, the show had Barbara Walters and her co-host discussing the Duke University study on the Atkins Diet and how the subjects lost weight and had improved blood lipid profiles. It, of course, is common knowledge that the Atkins Diet is heavy on animal fats, the supposed "bad" ones fingered by the show, but this was not mentioned by the hosts.

Even when some of the truth gets out there as it did in Gary's article, the Spin Doctors still seem to twist it to suit their own agenda--even with Gary on the damn show!

Hi DrByrnes Thanks for your evaluation of the 20/20 piece. Schizophrenic is the right word, that's for sure.

But, the segment 20/20 [ABC] ran was not half as bothersome as was the one done by CBS for the show '48 Hours'. Don't know if you happened to catch it, but in the midst of discussing the pros and cons of low carb, the 48 Hours report suddenly shifted to a profile of Dr. Atkins' private life and his homes. The nasty reporter made a huge deal about Dr. A's weath and lifestyle....as if the man, a cardiologist by training and a best selling author, did not somehow have the right to earn millions of dollars and live a wonderful lifestyle!!?? It was as if she was trying to say: "Look, all of you suckers who have bought into the low carb craze....All you really have done is helped Dr. A buy this fabulous house in the Hamptons."

It is no wonder CBS has the lowest ratings in network television news.
